I think the D44 was a move to directly 1:1 with jeep. Neither are bad IMHO.

I prefer not to have "C" Clip axles on the trail. Glad it has the 44

biggest downfall to an 8.8 "c"clip elims tend to leak as well.

Personally I would like a 31+ spline 9" especially with the deep gearing as a 9" gains pinon/ring gear contact as the gears get deeper. My 76 Bronco had 28 spline 9" & my XJ ended up with a custom Currie 31 Spline 9". Anyone see a trend :p

Don't see why Ford couldn't have converted 8.8 axle ends from the factory. Modern 44's still 8.5 ring gear?

Shame the high pinion 9's are so much, I've been spoiled with that, especially front that keeps my driveshaft out of the way and allows rear steer, on front axle.

Ford Bronco D44 vs 8.8 DCP02192

I could never understand why they just didn't put 9" housing ends on the 8.8 and call it a day. Axle retention and no "band-aid" like c-clip elims. Hell even companies like Moroso sells 9" ends.

Yeah. I've seen stock 8.8's survive on FSB's up through 38's pretty well. Heck, many of the jeep guys swap one in. Could have easily been made to work. I guess the D44 is now the "upgraded axle", LOL!!

Just did some checking because I got to thinking......

99-04 8.8 is 63" +/- flange to flange

Bronc has track width of 65 "

?close ......... now I need to find what the Dana 44 in the Bronc is flange to flange.

just throwing that out there. :D

Like everything else today, will it work with what ever control they have for ABS/traction control, virtual limited slips, even the lockers (does locker actuation institute some special mode??).
Will ECM need to know locker is locked?? Are stock lockers ARB type??

They are electric lockers, my guess it's an Eaton type. ECM should not matter except when you select a specific GOAT mode as there are independant controls for both front & rear lockers.

Doesn't really answer my question. Feedback loop for locker being lock? ECM care?

One of the best things about my 404 mogs is cable actuated locker (406 that I never got around to using are air, so same issue of ARB's, are they locked or not?). You can feel it engaging, and can back down on throttle until you feel it go all the way in. Big help in front as many times I only need to be locked for a couple feet.
