RC High Winch Mount & Winch Install w/ Control Box Relocation

Went back and forth on the subject. Should I remove the modular bumper? Should I go with factory, JCR, Rough Country? Sorry Mabett. Your timeline to manufacturing is too long. I decided price was gonna be the defining factor. How far it sticks out, approach angle and other factors weren’t that different.

Rough Country High Winch Mount:
I will say the instructions aren’t that great. I found it much easier to install the bottom half of the mount first. was having a tough time balancing the weight of the mount and winch to attach it to the bumper. Mounting the bottom half gave me room to get my hands in there as well. Then I mounted the winch to the plate. I followed up by wiring it, then mounting the top plate to the bottom half. The instructions also call for shaving down the back of the sensor they provide. This was not the case with the winch I chose. I think each winch will differ in that step.

Smittybilt Winch:
Pretty cut and dry. I just wired the longer cables before I bolted the plate down. It’s tough to work behind the RC mount, it’s pretty tight to the grill. Removed all the decals and painted the “Smittybilt” and the switch for free spool.

Control Box Relocation:
I decided to mount it to the lid of the fuse box. Was a simple install and it wasn't going to eat up space on the other side of the motor. Saving that for ARB compressor and maybe train horn. I used the Warn kit. Only needed the cables and black rubber boots.

Nice job! I'm looking at doing a similar setup. Could you post what you're front camera sees? And, what did you use to remove the stickers? DId you paint the entire winch?

How’s the front camera blockage? Relo needed or did moving the Control Box do the trick?

I took off the bumper. I did not remove the shackle or back plate though. I was an;e to pop loose the sensors with a small screwdriver. Then I attached the cable extentions RC included to keep from losing the plugs back into the bumper.

The decals came off clean except the yellow one. Used goo gone on that one. only painted the “SMITTYBILT” spool switch on top. They are easy to remove, paint and put back on.

The camera is still blocked atm. I don’t use it much anyway. RC says a relocation kit is coming soon. If not, I can use the one that JCR sells.

I started out not removing mine, but got a sensor sideways back there and couldn't get it turned around to retrieve it. I just sit unhooked the main harness plug on the drivers side, sit in a chair right in front of the bumper, impact the six bolts out and took the bumper off and sit across my knees, then stood up and then sit it across the chair arms, did the sensor work and then put it back on. The bumper hangs in the front end when not bolted in, it won't just fall on the floor when the bolts come out.

Here are some measurements I have done.

Barely 1.5” from the grill to the winch. Nicely tucked in.

Height of the winch w/o the control box is about 2” below the Bronco letters.

Very nice setup! Just finished mine up over the weekend, I relocated my control box to the passenger side since I don't plan on running a compressor. I ordered a JCR camera bracket as well, hoping to see that soon.

Wow! I like the fact that the wires are on the back side of the winch. It’s a much cleaner look! That’s the same place I mounted my controls. Not enough to remove the one I have but If it ever fails I’d switch for that reason.

Waiting for my RC mount to ship. I spent a little bit of time and completely disassembled the Badlands Apex control box guts. Plan is to attach to the frame horns you would cut off with the remote rc mount and extend the Bluetooth switch, Bluetooth module, and hardline plug to the top of the front radiator support.
