The AUX power box and grounding bar is a GREAT idea. So much easier to add stuff. If you change your mind and want to add something new or change switches, the little wire gets shorter and shorter as you cut off old connectors. This makes adding/changing stuff WAY easier. Thanks for sharing!

I don't see an entry for:

  • horsepower stickers
  • super secret bronco patches
  • 4x4 truck nuts.
Are those coming later?
Don't forget the ejector seat, oil slick, machine guns and rocket launchers!

Will be stealing your Aux switch junction box, as well as grounding busbar idea. Nice work!

Itā€™s long past time that I got around to putting together a build journal. I planned to write it as I installed things, but that didnā€™t happen. Fortunately, I at least got pictures as I went.

I havenā€™t been as active on the forums lately, so for those that donā€™t know Iā€™m pretty much a noob when it comes off-roading ā€“ and in some way cars in general. Since I reserved my Bronco, Iā€™ve read a lot, tried to learn from others here and elsewhere on the net, and generally tried to get myself up to speed. I am very much an amateur, but I typically have a good reason for why I chose something. Iā€™m hoping to make off-roading a regular activity for me and my family, but I also know that hopes for a new hobby or family activity sometimes donā€™t work as planned. So in general, Iā€™ve tried to strike a balance between getting a decent quality product without spending too much. If things go as I hope, I can always upgrade down the road. And this will also be my daily driver.

So without any more ado, here is the King in Yellow.
(And no, I havenā€™t developed delusions of grandeur. Itā€™s a reference in literary horror.)

I went with a 4-door Badlands, 2.7l Auto, MGV, Lux, MIC top in Cyber Orange. I opted against Sasquatch as I preferred the KO2s over the Goodyears, and I got everything else I wanted with Badlands. I originally included the tow package, but decided to remove it in the hopes of still getting an MY22. I reserved the first week in July 2020 and picked up September 17, 2022. Purchased through Serramonte Ford, who I would happily recommend.

I live in Sacramento, normally a 2-3 hour drive from Serramonte near San Francisco. But with an eye towards a proper break-in, avoiding the constant RPM of the interstate, I took a somewhat longer route home. Headed north across the Golden Gate Bridge, then cut across Sonoma and Napa Valleys, and took a couple of smaller highways to arrive home just after dark.

Good question...
I haven't even tried FM yet, been solely XM or Android Auto. Will try and remember to try out FM over the weekend. Getting out of the city so should be a useful test.

Nice build. The junction box is genius. Forgive my ignorance though...what is or will be connected to the grounding busbar? Where does that one wire go?

Basically it's just an easy grounding point. I ran a single wire from there to a good ground near the cowl. Now anything I attach to that busbar will be grounded.

Wowā€¦ I canā€™t believe you asked thatā€¦
<<secretly closes the browsers asking ā€œWhat is a busbar and what does it do?ā€>>

Glad you asked too! I still couldnā€™t figure it out after googling it. I really like the box setup and (now) the ground. Makes me wonder why Ford didnā€™t do it this wayā€¦

When I started planning early on, I was looking all over the place thinking these kinds of boxes would probably already exist for the off-road crowd or those with upfitter switches. When I couldn't find anything, I started to wonder if I was just crazy. Made sense to me so I found what I thought I needed and put it together. Tested and worked fine.

I still half expected to have people point out some boneheaded mistake or obvious oversight when I posted the details here. But the reception has been all positive. And it's super easy for anyone to quickly put together.

Quick post before I head out for the day. FINALLY getting off-road!

Here's a pic of where I put the trim badge on the swing gate. Also shots of the top of the cargo enclosure installed - properly attired - and the rear loaded up for the trip.
And finally, I went ahead and installed the quick attachment point for the dune flag.

Finally got the King on the trails yesterday. More to come on that, but here are a couple of quick pics from before I left.

And I discovered that the recently added turn-by-turn directions in Gaia also adds directions to the driver screen.
