How long will you stay at home? If there is a vaccine, it could be 18 months or more away, and likely not 100% effective.

Keep in mind, the shelter-in-place was not about you and I never getting COVID. Rather it was about not overwhelming health services with many cases in a short time span.

You mentioned staying home out of fear of contracting COVID. Yet most likely you are getting COVID (if you haven't got it already). Unless you plan to spend a year or more sheltering in place?

Two of my bird-hunting buddies are retired MDs. They keep telling me Covid is worse than what we think. We 3 are in a county with ~35,000 population...only 2 test-verified cases, and one death. And we still only venture out masked & gloved every other week or so for groceries.

Though the media coverage is now all about 'opening up'...it'll be awhile before the >65 crowd ventures out of our foxholes. I really feel for the folks whose job will require them to get out again.

This.

I have several physician friends (one of whom is an actual epidemiologist), and they had me concerned all the way back in December/January. None of them are saying hurrdurrHOAXJUSTTHEFLU. To a one, they're all telling me to maximize staying at home for the foreseeable future.

Everyone doesnā€˜t need to shelter.....just the ā€œat-riskā€ group. I wear glasses....and I donā€™t expect the government to make all the signage bigger (poor example.)

There will be more harm done by keeping everything closed. IMO.

Edit: I still think everyone should practice the social distance, masks, etc....I donā€™t like catching a cold.....so if masks were a western social norm, like in Asia....Iā€™m all for it! I agree we need to protect the elderly, or immunodeficiency folks, and they should stay indoors during this.
Just because stores are open, the storekeeper doesnā€™t have to open, nor does anyone need to feel compelled to shop....itā€™s a freedom of choice thing....IMO.

I wear glasses too...maybe why I always gravitated toward the ladies with big .........

Seriously - no reason to keep everything closed. Its impossible to be blindsided by Covid at this point.

100%. Like Texas opening restaurants with 25% max occupancy LOL.

If you show me a restaurant that is profitable with 25% max capacity I will eat my hat. I know for Scottsdale and Phoenix that I would bet ~40% if not more of our local restaurants are never re-opening. They had their busy season cut in half and are probably going to be expected to re-open in June or July. Similar stories are going to take place across the country, itā€™s just not going to work without some SERIOUS government interference (I mean like straight up socialism) which I donā€™t think people will be willing to stomach.

A friend at the airlines says that all they get is a mask....how is working an assembly line more at risk then loading up a plane full of people for 2-3 hours? UAW is a better Union I suspect.

But you're likely getting COVID (if you haven't already gotten it - given estimates of infected with low or no symptoms). Shelter in place isn't about you not getting COVID. So unless your local health care facilities are maxed out, or you are elderly or with a key health issue (obesity/diabetes/coronary) you likely are not reducing by much if at all the risk.

I agree with you though, going out to purposely party and do foolish group activities, would be unwise if only because it could defeat the purpose of shelter in place (spread out infection over time).

theres many restaurant's that can operate on 25% which is better than zero percent...Not even taking into account that just because it 25% at a given time they can't still serve the same number of people in a day. Texas is being very methodical and opening and as usual will lead the way on how to do it.

Agreed about focus on the elderly or those with health issues, given those folks are at significant higher risk compared to younger healthy people. Or people under 20 who are at a very low risk.

This older guy (limping in poor health) was delivering groceries to young people in my neighborhood with health and cash. Troubled society when the folks we should especially protect, are out catering to the perceived risks of those facing significantly lower real risk.

I'd love to see a doubling of cost for deliveries, going to the delivery people. At least that way, if some people have a high perceived risk of COVID, and are willing to have delivery persons incur that risk for them, then pay up.

Said from someone who has no idea how running a business works.

In a lot of cases it literally would be better to have 0% over 25%.

The United States is literally the last place on earth Iā€™d want to be right now. Private healthcare, an imbecile for a president and a high percentage of the population that thinks this whole thing is just an overblown stunt/hoax/joke/affront to their rights.

Common sense just ainā€™t that common I guess.
