2H - Power only to rear wheels - normal driving
4L- Power to all 4 wheels - low range for slow driving - Cannot be used at highway speeds
4H- Power to all 4 wheels - high range for more speed than 4L - Not recommended on highway
4A- Power to rear wheels and front ones as needed(decided by computer) Can be used at highway speeds.
I would just say 4H can be used on the highway, so long as it is in slick conditions, at any speed appropriate for those conditions. I'm always shifting in and out of 4H on snow slick roads, 4A does this for you.

Great summary, thank you. Is 4A equivalent to AWD in Subarus, Kias and others?

This is how it works on the F150. (Stolen from the F150 forum)

Rob O said:
In 4A, the system is costantly monitoring slip and distributes power (front/rear) as needed. It's predominately RWD under normal conditions, but not limited to 2WD; even stabbing the throttle will trigger distrbution of torque to the front. If you care to see it in action, just toggle the Productivity Display (in the instrument cluster) to the screen that shows torque distribution and it'll show what 4A is doing real time.

Being an electronically controlled transfer case is what makes it different from an AWD system, which sends power to the wheels (front/back and left/right) without a transfer case. And while Audi's quattro AWD in many of their models has a default torque distribution -- e.g., 60 % R and 40% front under normal conditions -- many models employ a Haldex AWD system which is predominately FWD until slip is detected. Same with Subaru (for the most part).[

Generally speaking AWD is not as robust, and usually does not have a true low range or “4L” as there is no transfer case. 4A does allow you to run with it on even when pavement is dry, or patchy snow or ice, etc. like AWD, however.

I have tried to watch the power distribution display on my Explorer (normally fwd with auto 4wd) but if I get on it hard enough for the rear to kick in things are getting pretty exciting outside and require my attention so my eyes disengage from the display!

Hope this is not the final finish.....the front dash looks like a big slab of plastic, especially on the passenger side
That area is for your own personal bumper sticker. Really class it up.

Revisiting this a bit...

That grab handle looks to be easily removed and replaced with other things. Like a mount for a tablet or CB.

I wonder if there are some modular Ford accessories in the works for this spot.
Good thinking @Paint !! most times a laptop mount uses the seat mounting bolts as attachment points making it harder for a passenger to sit there.. (y) (y)
