It looks great…right now. I’m pretty sure the “issues” we’ve seen with the MIC Top (honeycomb, delamination, rough/uneven edges) does not bode well for the longevity of this painted MIC Top.

Ask yourself this: if MIC Top painting works, why is Ford (designer of said MIC Top) not painting some Wimbledon White to meet the demands of white topped Broncos?
Because it would be a warranty nightmare.
Or because the process is too costly or not efficient in a production environment.

If you didn’t know this started as a textured MIC top you’d never guess it. Whatever they did created a smooth surface that I’d believe was the factory painted top if I weren’t a nutbar that lives on this forum who knows they don’t exist yet. Great work! No clue how it will hold up but today it was stunning.
almost like a deepfake
looks fantastic

I dunno why you couldnt just gel coat the damn thing smooth then paint it.
Same problem with paint, although you've added a sloppy heavy thick finish that will not chemically bond to the POM. You are relying solely on a physical or mechanical bond.

Glad I could make you laugh, if that was aimed/intended for/at me.

It's been over 30 years for me also, but I don't have access to a personal garage (I own a condo with shared garage) where I can actively continue to do it whenever I want. I do stuff now and then, but it's mostly for friends/co-workers and in their garages.

If people are going to paint/attempt to paint the MiC tops, like this Dealer did, it would be nice if they would let us know what they did as far as prep and what refinish products they used. (adhesion promoters, primer/s, color coats, clear coats and such)

This way, those of us with experience can gain knowledge as to what may work and to what issues may arise, mostly with adhesion and repair, if it gets damaged/chipped.
So I reached out to them on Instagram (saw it first there). That was my exact question. "hey I plan on getting my MIC top painted, any tips or tricks I should know about or issues?"

No help, all they said was bring it here. I said it would be almost 2000 mile round trip and they just send 👍

I had a funny feeling they wouldn't reveal how they did it. All about the Benjamins. That's okay, others will figure it out too. Hopefully there will be a local solution for everyone interested in doing this to their MIC tops.

Yup mine quotes $2400

Two biggest questions pertaining to longevity is will the paint adhere properly considering:

a) the flex/shrinkage
b) the chemical release as the top cures

If that price is what to expect, I think waiting for the mod top would be a better choice. Those will be more functional and have a warranty.
