My Ford Accessories trailer brake controller arrived Friday. Here are pics of the unboxing. Looks like an easy plug and play installation. Interesting note, the label on the box states "Majority content made in USA" - but the controller module is made in Australia and the wiring harnesses are made in Taiwan.

What does this do exactly? I got the towing package, should I order one of these?

Adjusts the gain for the brakes of the trailer. Which is the force in which the trailer brakes will be applied when you step on the brake pedal. If you’ll be towing a trailer with brakes they will not be used without a trailer brake controller.

Easy answer - if the trailers that you tow have a 4 wire/pin electrical connector, then no you don't need this. If the trailers that you tow have a 6 or 7 pin electrical connector, then you most likely do need this (or some other trailer brake controller.)

OR - if your trailer has electric brakes, you need this or some other brake controller. Easy way to tell if you are new to towing is by the connector - 4 pin connector = no electric brakes. 6 or 7 pin connector = you probably have electric brakes.

At least it looks like they give you a template to use for cutting into your dash. Could be worse - You could just have to “wing it.”

Is there any alternative to drilling dash? How accessible does the controller need to be and how often would it need to be adjusted? Can it be mounted under steering column somewhere to avoid drilling? Sorry, im not knowledgeable on this at all but I’m interested.

It doesn't need to be super-accessible and doesn't need to be adjusted much if you tow the same trailer and same weight. I'd want it somewhere I can adjust while driving however.

I just bought the same setup for my 4Runner. They sent me the same template and plate. I bought a second plate for the dial that is made to fit in one of the "dead" switch panels in the 4Runner and it will look totally stock. This is the downside to the AUX switches on the Bronco....you can't put something like this in it.

The Redarc can look pretty clean and stock if you put it in the right spot. Not sure where that would be on the Bronco but I'm sure someone will find a good spot for it.

Here's an example on a 4Runner:

Redarc is the same brand that 24/7 4wd uses right?

Does that unit not have a direct control slider so you can engage the trailer brakes manually without having to engage the vehicle brakes too?
