My observation is that the alternator placement on the 2.3l is not awesome for serviceability, but likely adequate to stay up out of water and mud for 80% of use cases.

My question is, is the alternator a totally sealed unit as it appears to be here? That would be a win for longevity and reliability.

In my experience most alternators are ventilated / open frame which is obviously not optimal for dirt/water ingression:

Aren't the holes in an alternator meant for cooling? A sealed up unit would build up a lot of heat I would think. Heat and electronics aren't the best of friends.

It is a water cooled alternator.

Water cooled - intended as humor, i ‘spect.
Do you remember when people were passing that picture of a supposedly Bronco 2.7 out of the chassis around with all the hoses running everywhere? That was actually a BMW motor that came with a water cooled alternator and that is what some of those lines were for.

It could be true. multiple applications have used them over the years. BMW, and more. I wasnt a huge fan, but it could get us a sealed alternator the rangers dont have

In photo of chassis/powertrain
that alternator does look to have some ? Plumbing in the back - could, indeed, be coolant serviced….,I’d never heard of such
