You honestly believe that? Ford might of had unrealistic expectations for the design, but Webasto come up with a prototype that met Ford's requirements, obviously. Trying to meet production requirements is where it went to hell.
There is a LOT to automotive supplier procurement than just picking and choosing.

Let me ask you this, if the original design was solid and it was just that the manufacturer couldn’t make them correctly then why did Ford redesign them? To compensate for the inability for the tops be be made correctly by Webesco or because the original design was shit?

The job of Ford is to design something that can be manufactured. Period.

I believe that a second plant is being made by Webasco. If they are truly that incompetent do you think Ford would continue the relationship?

How do you know Ford redesigned them? Ford says they need rolled edges and thicker exterior material. Do you think rolled edges were left out of the design in the first place? Or if Webastholes uses a slower, careful manufacturing process, the tops come out better? Who knows for sure...
I do know, there are hard tops out there that don't have these flaws... Maybe a combination of the two.
Webasto lost the contract for the modular/painted tops due to their incompetence.
The ONLY reason Ford is still dealing with Webasto for MIC tops is because they have nobody else to turn to in the short term. They can't source another supplier, tool them up and ramp up production in 2 months. The fact that mod tops won't be available unto 2023 is proof of that.
My guess... Whoever got the mod top contra t will be sourced for future MIC tops. Webasto will help dig ford outta this hole, then they'll be bu-bye....

How do you know Ford redesigned them?

Bottom line is we know very little about what is or is not being done with the tops. It's not like there is a lot of transparency @Ford Motor Company.

There is a lot that we can infer or speculate about, but actually having knowledge would take someone with access to that information, like @PREMiERdrum. He has proven to be a pretty reliable source and as accurate as we could hope for, but even he can't tell us everything we really want to know.

I also understand that to some extent, as consumers, we shouldn't be expecting much more information than we are getting. I wouldn't be surprised if there are trade secrets and other NDA'd information that simply cannot be shared publicly.

I think we all wish that we could be a fly on the wall and know everything, but that's not going to happen.
