The Vortec 8100? What about it was LS-based? It came from the big block architecture and shared its bore with the 454, along with bore spacing and bellhousing pattern. It had 18-bolt heads...do you think it was "LS-based" because it had symmetrical intake ports and the LS firing order?Seriously though, I have been following the 7.3L closely as it is the closest true successor to the old 8.1L LS based engine.
Fuel economy is not good. Towing or unloaded the GM 6.6 beats it by a significant margin. Note that it was pulling LESS weight than the Chevy and it has the 10 speed auto vs. only a 6 speed on the Chevy and the Chevy got 23% better mileage.and fuel economy is so good that I’m sure a lot of fleets will be reevaluating the need for diesel.
I get that its hp/tq ratings are sandbagged from the factory and Ford is leaving room for improvements throughout this engine's run, but I figured they'd go all out on efficiency from the get go if they were serious about this being a viable HD truck engine.
