2023 Bronco Drive @ Big Bend National Park

Mark your calendar for December 27th - 30th, 2023 to explore Big Bend National Park with other Broncos.

The basic plan is to:
1) Use the Chisos Basin campground as basecamp.
2) Explore remote sections of Big Bend National Park.
3) Dine in the evenings at the Chisos Mountains Lodge. (Of course, if you want to make your own meals, that is cool too.)

Chisos Basin Campground
Several campsites have parking for two vehicles. Group campsites are also available. Fuel is available near the Panther Junction Visitors Center, and the Rio Grande Village Campground.

Arrival: December 27th
Big Bend is remote. Arrival times will vary, so nothing is planned for this day. Upon arrival, you will need to get a park permit for the duration of your stay. (If you arrive after hours, you can get one the next morning.)
After you setup your campsite, walk around the campground and meet other Bronco owners as they arrive and get settled.

Trail Day 1: December 28th

• Meet in the parking area behind the Chisos Mountain Lodge.

• Brief driver meeting.

• Head to Santa Elena Canyon. You will want to get out and take pictures.

• Drive the river road toward the hot springs. Some drivers may want to soak in the hot springs.

• Meet at the Chisos Mountain Lodge for dinner.

Trail Day 2: December 29th

• Meet in the parking area behind the Chisos Mountain Lodge.

• Brief driver meeting.

• Drive to the Grapevine Hills Trail for those who want a short hike to see the balanced rock.

• Drive to the Old Ore Road toward the Rio Grande Overlook and the Boquillas Canyon Overlook.

• Meet at the Chisos Mountain Lodge for dinner.

I am interested but I have a 30' rv. The family is not excited about going back to tent camping. I am looking at RV parks that are close and can take our rig.
Anyone have any suggestions? I found Stillwell Store and RV park.

@law No, you don't wanna be in Alpine. you'll be driving forever. Look for RV parks in/near Study Butte and Terlingua. From there it's about 45 min to Chisos campgrounds. Look up Lost Gringo or BJ's RV Park.

Hey! I've been to BBNP multiple times and even wrote a tongue-in-cheek first time visitors / hikers guide (just shoot me a DM) if anyone is interested! I'll try to make this trip.

I might try to come, but will likely try to get a different, more secluded campsite.

@Draughon I'd like to get an airbnb somewhere around Terlingua. If I can get one early enough, looks like a decent selection/price.

@Meraki Hammocks I have my reservations booked. Is there anything I need to think about before the trip? Radio for coms? Do you have a head count? I’ve never been to Big Ben nps.
I am very familiar with the area so I know how remote everything is.
Thanks for putting this together. It’s something I have wanted to do for a long time.

Just booked my stay for a week in Terlingua Ghost town. Highly recommended if you're not camping and wanna be close to places to eat.

Also, anyone going for the first time --> hit me up for my tongue-in-cheek first time visitors / hiking guide to the area! There's def some things you need to take into consideration before you go to make your trip less challenging.

@Draughon Also I'll be there for about 10 days - so if anyone is coming in a couple of days early or staying a couple of days later - I can show you some other cool areas of the park as well!

Hi all, I joined this group when it first started but work went nuts and I had to wait to get my rig and it finally came in so I'm getting back into the groove. If I came, I'd likely bring my wife and two teenage daughters. Does anyone else bring family or is it more of an adult thing? I don't want to ruin the vibe for everyone else.

@focaloca95 If you've never been, Terlingua and BBNP is def something that an entire family would enjoy.

@Draughon I'm also trying to join in on this event with the fam, first time BBNP'er. DM'd you for your guide! Something around Ghost Town looks like a great option for the fam.

Also, if any of you are staying past New Years Day - the annual "Pea Off the Porch Contest" should be fun to participate in! Everyone brings their best black eyed pea recipes and we all show up to eat it all...

So this will be my first off road group gig so I bought a GMRS Wouxun radio. Anyone know if there are working repeater towers in BB NP that we can use? I looked at the mygmrs.com repeater map and don't see anything in the park but read a couple of forums that said they exist.

Aloha! We are a little over a month away from the Bronco Drive. I am looking forward to seeing all of the Broncos in Big Bend. There are about 50 Broncos who have joined the Bronco Drive. Several will arrive on 12/26 and will be staying in Chisos Basin, Rio Grande Village, and AirBnbs around Terlingua.

Due to the size of the group, we have outgrown the restaurant at Chisos Mountain Lodge. We will plan to meet up for dinner at https://lakiva.com/ in Terlingua for dinner on 12/28.

Please tag me in posts, and I will be happy to respond.

The NPS should release more sites in Chisos Basin and the Rio Grande Village campground campground ten days in advance of your arrival date. They will go quickly.
