Wharton State Forest (NJ) Trail Ride - Sunday 1/16

  • I edited the title and description to reflect a Sunday ride. Also if you have friends with Jeeps I have no qualms with them riding as well. The more the merrier - a Rubicon i know may come too.

Hi guys. As of now I'm a go.

As you can see from my profile picture, this Wrangler is my normal wheeling rig. It has everything I need to get out of a sticky situation. Winch, recovery gear, on-board air, big tires, all of that stuff. But it's my intent to leave it at home and give the Bronco its inaugural wheeling trip, albeit a very light version of what I normally do in the Jeep.

I don't know Wharton at all. I have never been. I've got it in my onX GPS app. That's all I know. I've done Jeep wheeling in Sedona, Estes Park, Colorado Springs, all over the northeast including the Catskills, Penns Woods, Coal Mountain, and of course Rausch/AOAA etc. But that was always in a BIG Jeep with all of the aforementioned gear.

I'm ASSUMING this is a pretty easy set of trails with a few sections that might be at least a little bit challenging for a stock truck. I'm bringing my completely stock Bronco Badlands/Sasquatch 4 door with my portable Viair compressor, my recovery gear out of my Jeep, (tree saver, snatch block, recovery strap, some shackles, etc.) and, if it arrives in time, a GMRS handheld since my current GMRS is hard wired into my Jeep. I will also bring my ARB hydraulic jack. It goes without saying that any gear I bring is available to all to use.

More details appreciated, I am really looking forward to trying the Bronco on something other than pavement!

Only time I've been there I had no problem on most of it in a non sas black diamond 4Dr. The puddles are deceptively deep due to the sandy bottom. I think they just get easily torn up by other riders. Mentioned it before but we did sink a 2door with 37s. It's fun but far chiller and less technical than the places you mentioned.. I did get more mud on mine there than my trips to RC and AOAA. It's a good spot to test out your new baby
I don't think I'll be making this trip. Looks like I'd better begin my research and acquire some recovery gear, obtain a GMRS license and a radio, etc. Like I said, total noob. I'll look for some local fire roads and such to screw around on, in the meantime. Gotta be honest, I'm not thrilled with the idea of coating every component 3' off the ground of my new rig in mud, before I even finish break-in and first oil change. I'll keep an eye out for future events.

im no radio expert but i believe so long as you stick to lower wattage channels on the walkies and therefore are only transmitting for short ranges you should be ok w/o the license. also my understanding is channels 1-7 in gmrs overlaps with FRS spec and that also doesn't require license . As for recovery gear... My rig only has a $10 tow strap from harbor freight and some shackles on the front bumper tow mounts. I think depot sells them too. If you do get stuck - just alert the group and someone will use whatever we go on hand. When I got stuck in the water i came to realize that keeping the strap in the trunk was probably not the best idea . would have been better if i moved it to where i can reach it and pass it out the window to whoever is planning on saving me. As for mud - you usually can drive around the puddle.. did that on some i just wasn't sure of the depth in. its just i guess that i dont understand what you mean about not wanting to get mud on your bronco - i sorta went the other direction once i got her..
@LatinoComedian .. I believe you already stated you were up for going on another thread. Would you mind adding your status here so we can start getting an accurate head count for sunday?

I'm in like Flynn. Just updated my status. Just got my recovery boards so i will get a strap, some sandwiches, and a bottle of water. Let's do this!!!! Just let me know where we will meet up and I'll be there ready to go! Thank you for setting this up. I use Gaia so I'll have to look up and see if any trails look interesting.
    @JeepersCreepers @hoboo128 @Tor148 @usarms @LatinoComedian @WingedBronco ....

Right now I count 6 going on this event page... Wingedbronco can you remove yourself as you have stated you won't make it... Usarms, you are missing from the list. I will be setting up a DM for all going to share contact info either tonight or tomorrow. Giving time for others to jump in.

Thinking of of a 9am meetup at the park. Need agreement on rally spot.. can use the Atsion ranger station parking lot unless there are better ideas. Please talk up others in regional groups to be updated on this events page if they are going so I can include in the DM. Once I have all numbers I will set up a group sms for people to alert us of their arrival and progress should they be running late.

If you have non B6G members coming that's cool just have them show and keep track of them yourself.. wouldn't want someone running late missing out on the ride because we didn't know about them. When all on the DM are accounted for and they say there full party is there we can move out.

Guys, a few tips/thoughts... I think we may have some pretty new off-roaders here. Forgive me if I'm overstating the obvious!

    • Dress warm and wear boots if possible -- probably will be a little wet/muddy/possibly snow/slush/ice - *pro tip* - bring a second pair of shoes and socks, a towel and a big garbage bag!
    • Bring snacks and drinks
    • Show up at the rally point with a full tank of gas
    • If you have any recovery gear, please bring it including tire deflators and portable air compressors. I will bring mine but if we have a bunch of aired-down rigs it will take a long time for just one or two compressors to get everyone going
    • Other great gear to bring IF YOU HAVE IT is a tow strap, shackles, and a tree saver. If you don't have this or don't know what it is don't worry about it, we'll have some there
    • If you don't have AAA it's a nice option to have "just in case... " It's probably the best penny-for-penny investment you can make if you do any off-road driving at all.
This is probably overkill as these trails look pretty basic, although I've never been I did a little research and there's not a lot of ways to really get stuck that we can't handle with a simple tow strap. But it's always better to come with more than you need!

Looking forward to more details including the rally point from our fearless leader, @JBMontclair.

What an awesome day we had at Wharton. We all met up at our rally point at 9am (5broncs +2 Rubis) only to find that a Facebook based "Garden State Overlaclub was also rallying there for a trail ride. So we all joined up and rode it all together. Guessing we had around 15 vehicle total but the broncos stole the show.. well that and our Rubi Steve's splashing around.

Mud holes were deep but also covered in 3in ice. Many did get stuck, myself the bronco the Rubicon's and some diesel Ford pickup with monster sized swamp tires that we came across on the trails late in the day.

Hopefully we can get some pics and short vids posted and talk up getting future events going on this group and get an even bigger showing.. 5broncs is so far the best showing yet.. let's talk what to do next out on the main group page and use this to recall our favorite moments and of course pics and vids. Thx for all who were able to come and made this happen. I felt our showing and joining up with the other club brought excitement and awareness of how capable the Bronco platform is.

Oh remember when you gotta cross a minefield it's Toyotas first.

Adding a comment to follow the thread as I'm trying to make myself available for Sunday. Will know better in the next 24 hours or so but would love to make it my first outing down there and with the 6G crew...
Not by any means rushing the trip but how long do you think the ride will take? This will help me better understand if I can make it. A rough range is fine.
