Trail rides the weekend of May 4th or 11th?

Will be staying up in Ellijay for a few weeks while in between houses so will have easy access for a bit and no projects keeping me from enjoying some free time.

Will plan a route once I get an idea of headcount but open to recommendations.

I have some open time tomorrow and I was thinking of doing Old Bucktown Road. Is it a safe bet to go solo on that trail for a relative newbie to off roading? I don't have a winch. Anyone interested in slacking off and joining me? I will probably shoot to get to Nimblewill sometime mid morning. I am looking to get out more with experienced folks when I have time.

Also - I am doing the ORA 101 class in Dahlonega next weekend. Sounds like some folks here found it valuable.

Typically I would be down to clown but have a ton to get done around the house before the move.

I'd recommend starting from the top and heading down if you are really nervous about getting stuck. Gravity is your friend. Plus you get some warm up maintained gravel roads on the approach.

Good hiking at the start of the trail to get out and stretch the legs as well.

I did make the trip yesterday. I drove up Nimblewill and walked around and ate. BUT my plans got derailed when an Appalachian Trail hiker said she was done and wanted a ride to a lodge. She was struggling. SO I drove her back down Nimblewill to the Amicalola Falls lodge. That was about an hour and I was thinking of throwing in the towel but I decided to press on and went to Old Bucktown from the bottom.

It was really fun. Started off dicey with some deep ruts that I wasn't sure about the best way to approach. But ultimately the Bronco didn't seem to worried about it. I didn't use the lockers or 4L. Ultimately ended up to be a great day.

Sad about the thru hiker. Hope she gets her nerve after thinking it over a bit. Proud of anyone who tries one of the triple crown hikes. Glad you were able to have some fun on Old Bucktown. We really have to get some rides together soon.

Just moved here from NH. My Bronco arrives in a couple of days!

My NH license plate says 698DAYS - the amount of time it took from Reservation Day until it was delivered in my driveway. I need to come up with a new one in GA. I tried ever combo of Buckin and it gets turned down, probably too close to a naughty word. Buck is my last name so I thought it would be clever.

Looking forward to some easy / medium trail rides.

Hey guys. Weather looks to be clear and cool on tomorrow and should be a good day for what’s likely a first ride of the season/year? Think it’s a good idea to hit up our old faithful trail network that starts at Forest Service Road 28-1, just a bit west of Dawsonville off of Georgia 400 if coming from the Atlanta metro. These are very easy trails that even passenger cars traverse regularly, but they’re fun and offer nice views as we’ll climb above 3000 ft. It gets cool, but doesn’t look to be too cold. For the most part, no need to even air down if this will be your first unless for comfort. Our average speed is likely to be around 15mph or so (why rush?) So for those who’d like to come out, we’ll plan to meet at Nimblewill Baptist Church (trust, its fine). How are thoughts on 9:00am tomorrow? This means I’ll leave Atlanta at around 7:30am. We should be done rolling between noon and 2pm.

Address to Nimblewill Baptist Church 2-84 Nimblewill Gap Rd Dahlonega, GA 30533

Your Bronco Trail App is free and has a good log of trails and a great source for ideas and destinations, not so much for using during a ride, but it’s pretty cool.

If new to this, Welcome! It’ll be fun and becomes addictive. Bring water, note that cell coverage will be very spotty. If you have any sort of FRS or GMRS walkie talkie, etc, good idea to bring. I always carry a trauma kit, bring tools, recovery gear, tire repair kit, etc. Everyone eventually needs these, but just fine to build up to them and budget. No one’s getting left behind up there and we are going nowhere that will damage the Bronco; just pay attention to where your wheels are and it’ll be fine. These are gravel roads with some rocks and branches here and there, but nothing gnarly at all.

Sounds like the Ranger boys are heading to the lower cohutta trails on 3/2. I'm going to try to roll out there and join them. If anyone else wants the details I will send them through.

Where’s that? Never heard of it. Just installed my Ford Performance Diff Cover and added some AMSOIL 75w-90, so a couple of weeks to ensure I didn’t screw anything up and I’ll be ready to roll. Haven’t hit a trail since the Adventure in late December. Y’all see that there? Ha ha!

Any trails worth doing just south of Blairsvilles towards the suches area? I know Beasley knob is out that way but no way I am trekking that solo. I am guessing anything else around there are WMA mild forest rides.

Let's connect. I plan on getting a show spot. Not because I think other people will think my Bronco is special and want to see it; rather I am looking for a centralized spot to get out of the sun, relax, and have a drink. Ping me to drop by my tent. I reached out to the Georgia Broncos Club, as they are suppose to have a section in the Club section. No one has responded, so I may just be in the general field. My buddy from Indiana should be in his club section. We plan on walking around and hanging in both spots.

I know that there have been some gates added overtime to Cashes Valley. From what I was sent earlier today it appears we will no longer have any access to what was a laid back and scenic trail.

I plan to make a ride out come February to scope things out and verify but in the meantime if you aren't willing to have a wasted trip you may want to not head to Cashes.

@Calm horse last time I was there it was a little dangerous too. If you don’t hold around the right edge of one of the last crossings, it gets deep.. like probably deeper than our spec’d forging depth

Hurricane creek. Hey everyone, just wanted to know if anyone is gonna be/want to be in NC Jan 29-31? Planning to do hurricane creek near Waynesville NC. You will encounter steep drops on one side of the trail with a steep bank on the other so it definitely can’t get very technical. There are also plenty of water crossings and tight twisty rocky trails. The scenery is awesome and there are a bunch of trails nearby. Nothing is set in stone yet but I’ll be up there in Maggie valley during those dates and probably end up soloing it if no ones available. Cheers!

Hope everyone had a great Christmas. Been a while since we’ve all gone out, so would be great to get in a winter run on trails that say open. The wife and I are heading out for a couple days on a getaway in the Mountains of NC, but if anyone is down to roll on Saturday, let me know? Want to try Old Bucktown Raod, or anywhere.

Some buddies and I wheeled and camped 2 weekends ago over in Rocky Bottom, SC. Was my first go over there and loved it. Very nice views and campsites; putting in a pic below. Got in a nice hike with a waterfall too. That area should be awesome in Spring.

So, update gents! Think I’m out for tomorrow. Just back from the mountains of NC and did some of what I thought would be light wheeling alone with just me and the wife and man, that was an experience….. Was almost a wheeling disaster. I scoped what I thought was going to be an easy trail in Sapphire NC at Gorges State Park. Trail is Chestnut Mountain Road. It hooks up with a tougher trail called Auger Hole Road which straddles the state park with Federal land. Chestnut was decent; has a big climb, but fairly easy to do alone. Problem was, wasn’t clear signage to mark where that trail ended and the tougher one started. Well, I took the hard right at the split to the harder one. It was awesome, but…. Picked up my wife from her spa day at around 1:00. We had dinner reservations at 6:45. Takes 40 mins to get to the trail and again back, so I figure maybe 3 hrs of wheeling. Boy was I wrong. The first trail is only 3.2 miles. Auger is 9.5, but the end of it isn’t to a paved road. There was an awesome river in the middle and a cool guy and his family in their Wrangler were behind us until the river where the only campsite is (pee). I’m only driving 3 to 5 mph because it was wet and muddy with trees down everywhere, so I picked up some new pinstripes. Took some cool pics and vids at the river with the Jeep guy and his family and it’s around 3:30 at this point. Crossing the river is the start of the federal land and things get knarly quickly. Didn’t want to go back the way I came, so I adventured into the harder part. Will try to buff and polish out the striping with my orbital since it didn’t blow through the clear coat. Had my offline maps, food, water, more layers, tools, etc, but not my full pack out. End of Auger is just a forest service road in SC just across the border. So I drive and drive all around this big lake and finally pop out at a Duke Energy site and civilization! Aired back up; it’s dark by now and we made it to dinner only 20 mins late. Crazy day, scared my wife a good bit and tested myself and the Bronco; it was awesome! Felt so alive, but I’m tired as all heck. Pics are next.

Is anyone planning on making it out to Caffeine and Octane this Sunday? I am not going to be in the main show case but if some of you Atlanta folks are half way to the hills we could try to plan a trail ride.

I know the ATL Bronco pavement princess crew will likely be out in full force Sunday. I only plan to stop in for maybe an hour or so once the sun is up and its a little warmer outside.

Settled in at a spot off of nimblewell gap road friday night. There were several spots to choose from when we arrived but those all filled quickly by 5-6pm.

Definitely going to be reconsidering bringing both dogs with us on future expeditions.

The gazelle T4plus performed well but did prevent us from doing old bucktown rd. Need to look into a way to secure it better. The thing is massive and takes up the entire space between the front seats from the back of front seats to the rear. Considering a hitch hauler but that will prevent any wheeling and camping.

Get out and adventure before all the leaves are down it was definitely nice seeing colors other than green all day.

I have that same tent and of course have my 2 Door. The T4 is about 5 feet long in the bag. Great tent, easy to set up, sealed pretty good to protect from wind, water, snakes, and bugs fairly decent, but takes up a ton of space. I have a roof rack and got a Yakima platform. Use T eye bolts to tie it down and another ratchet strap for extra security so it doesn’t go flying when on the highway. I have the small Lock N Load platform so the tent hangs off a bit. Also have room for my MaxTrax up there too when I think I’ll need them.

@MadMan4BamaNATL I've got the T4plus but it weirdly packs in to be roughly the same size as the T4. The screen room space is awesome to get away from bugs. The ability to stand up in a tent makes it worth the struggle.

If weather allows it goes up on the roof rack but then I'm topless.

I think long term the best solution will be to buy a hardtop but that's still a PITA.

Yeah we've got a 4 door and the T8 takes up the entire passenger rear of the vehicle haha. It's a beast, but DANG is it nice to have out there. Hard to find a great footprint large enough for it on most of the dispersed sites, but we make it work. Great spot you found there! The dogs'll both love it next time!

After the fiasco that was my weekend last weekend I am going to be making it up to do some trails this weekend. If the Phillies lose tonight it will turn into an overnight camping trip.

Would like to run up/down Old Bucktown if there is more than just myself. Views at the top should be pretty decent. Could do some other trails after depending on which direction gets decided on.

Well the goose has been cooked as they say. I'll be angling for a Friday night camp and a Saturday ride.

I'll be camping at a site at one of these two locations depending on availability.

Will check for space in Jones Creek Campground first.

If no space available I will check between nimblewell gap road and the top of old bucktown.

Will have GMRS and a ham radio will post my channels closer to leaving if anyone wants to find me.

May bring the wife and dogs out. Dogs don't really do great with other dogs.

We will be heading up around 3PM today.

GMRS 2 (primary) or 4 and HAM - 435.525 (primary) - 438.500

Will be checking the spaces between nimblewell gap rd and old bucktown first then doubling back to Jones creek as a back up. More creek frontage at the first sites.

Will be staying until about noonish tomorrow then doing some trail riding.

Fresh off of my ban. Saw that there are plans for a trail ride up around nimblewell this weekend. Looks like they plan on meeting up at the Iron Mountain Grill at 11AM eating lunch and then riding.

I may attend that and also camp out on Friday night depending on how my week goes.

Also Skottles and Bottles in Kennesaw on Saturday in the afternoon.

The craziness of my schedule has been passed so should be free to plan some more rides and other things on some of the upcoming weekends.

@Born2Drive sounds like they are doing the forest service roads through nimblewell and not the off-road park.

From what I have seen meet up at 11 and they are leaving the restaurant at 12:30

Maybe do some night riding around the nimblewell area.
