Interesting. Mine definitely was not an oil burning smell. Burning brakes and clutches have similar odors to each other - both are pungent and acrid. I suppose if oil can get into the clutch, then the clutch could slip and thus cause the burning smell.

Mine has had a clutch burning smell 7 or 8 times and for no apparent reason (ie: without fast starts, racing around, leaving the clutch partially depressed while driving, etc.). Not counting my spouses cars, I have only driven manuals since the 70's and never encountered this noise or a...
