I was in Daytona today, took an incredibly awesome ride on scenic A1A from St Augustine, south. A real Oceanside ride. Drove the 6 1/2 mile beach trail. Saw two four doors on the way.

That is the Ocean Trace beach access which is still St. Augustine Beach. Butler Beach is south of that with the Mary Street beach access the first northern access point for Butler Beach. Butler Beach was named after Frank Butler owner of The Palace Market in Lincolnville, developer and civil rights pioneer. Early on the beaches of St. Johns county were segregated and African-Americans were not permitted in the water. Frank developed Butler Beach area to give African-Americans a place to recreate in the water. Prior to that, the only beach north of Daytona that permitted African-Americans was American Beach on Amelia Island.

Be careful... turtles are nesting..

Turtle patrol conducts morning surveys each day for fresh turtle crawls and nests. Nests will be clearly marked with plenty of buffer to allow the nest to remain undisturbed. When the gestation period is near term, the turtle patrol will monitor and rake out the front beach face to provide an unobstructed path to the ocean.
