I'm pretty handy and could make these fit, but does anyone know if the holes are there in prior year models? I'm guessing these weren't a sudden thought, but rather a prior year omission.

The airbags aren’t any different nor were they redesigned. The handles do not get in the way of the airbags. They were designed around the airbags that were already there.Prior years have that area on the A-pillar reserved for airbags. The airbags were redesigned for 2026 to make space for the handles.
If you retrofit you'll likely kill those particular airbags, or if not, turn the handles into high-speed projectiles aimed at the heads of the driver and front passenger.
