Awesome! I'm contemplating a trip to the arctic ocean, which from here is about 8200 miles round trip if going to Tuktoyaktuk in the NW Territories. It would be tempting to venture over to Anchorage so that would make it more like 11000 miles. That's a long way so I'd pull a tiny camper and take my sweet time!

What was your route from Kodiak to PA?

This is a good thread! There is so much posting on nuances of the MIC top, where to mount the front license plate, or obsessing about production delays. What about where we want to go?

You had an epic adventure to Alaska! While I’m not sure I care about where I will mount my front license plate, I am sure that I will take some epic drives and hopefully those will include the Alcan highway.

My contribution to this thread are some pictures from various adventures representative of what I’ll be doing in my 2 door rear-seat-delete Bronco. I joke that for me it is not the journey but the destination, which is only partially true, but I need want an overlanding rig to take me to remote fly fishing destinations. Pics below are rental cars from various adventures. The Alaska plate was covered in a uniform coat of mud as was the entire vehicle from one adventure near Denali.

You may be asking yourself how I’m going to fit my 9’ fly rods inside my 2 door cab. Life is about compromise, and I personally want to maximize maneuverability with the small vehicle, so I’ll have to get a roof rack mounted fly rod holder like this:

With the range on the 2D, some of these road trips will inspire more range anxiety than a Nissan Leaf

I made a pretty slick rod holder out of some ABS plastic pipe bought at Lowes, with screw-on caps and held to the rack with u-bolts and a couple pieces of aluminum bar. The whole setup looked great and cost about $50. I could fit 4 rods with reels if I stuck 2 in one way and 2 the opposite, or 6 rods if I took the reels off.
I've switched to telescoping rods with spinning reels the last few years because they collapse down small enough to fit in a backpack or motorcycle saddlebag.
I seem to catch fish just as well with that rig, and my normal rod is 7' long when extended.

This is a fair comment. The 16.9 gallon gas tank on the 2 door is a bummer and for remote adventures I’ll carry a gas can. That being said, I’ve never come close to having an issue as I always try to drive in the top half of the tank on trips as mentioned below. Also, while it may not be relevant on the overlanding roads, I’m hoping I have the patience to drive my aerodynamic brick closer to 55mph, but we’ll see about that!

“Gas, diesel, food and lodging are found in towns and cities along the Alaska Highway, as well as at smaller unincorporated communities, roadhouses and lodges located between the larger population centers. With the closure of several long-time roadhouses in recent years, and the seasonal nature of others, motorists should plan for 100 to 150 miles between services on a couple stretches of highway. Pay attention to your gas tank and drive on the top half of your tank. Motorists should also keep in mind that not all highway businesses are open year-round, nor are most services available 24 hours a day.”

I agree, good way to keep your mind off the wait. Once you get it, you'll be ready to take another great trip!

Thought you'd be interested in this trip made in an early 60's era Ford Fairlane in 1966 from Philadelphia to Alaska by my grandparents... It was all gravel at that time. My father attached screening to the underside to keep the stones from damaging the car. It was over 4,800 miles to Fairbanks from Philly for their trip.

If they only bought a 1966 Bronco for that trip!

There's a saying up north (and true for Baja too I've found) - never pass gas

Yeah, those big tanks spoil you. Although filling smaller tanks, albeit more often lessens the sticker shock at the pump. We carried 10 gallons with us, had to use it once. Got the singular pleasure of filling up with a jerry can at the Arctic Circle (~-25f, unlike water, gas doesn't freeze and is very cold when it soaks through your gloves.)

A few years ago a group of us did about 700 miles of UT back roads on the way to Moab, mostly dirt. Almost 3 weeks altogether. Camping most of the time but a couple nights in motels due to rain. We were all in Jeeps, me in my white XJ that the Bronco will be replacing. Drove the XJ from Bakersfield to Price UT, then hit the dirt, lots of nights camping, then Moab for most of a week, then drove back home to Bakersfield. I've driven, built, and raced XJ's for 28 years, but I'm excited for a change to learn a new platform. Planning on doing plenty more exploring in the Bronco. Here's some pics of a really epic exploration and sightseeing trip. BTW, I've planned and organized quite a few off roading trips and events, and wouldn't mind putting together some new Bronco trips...when we all get our Broncos.

I was trying to keep Bronco shortcomings out of my post but this is certainly a concern of mine. One of the first things I'm going to dig into after taking delivery is the feasibility of putting an auxiliary tank under the cargo area. My rough measurements show there might be as much as 20 gallons of room there but the muffler must be moved upstream and then plumbing would have to be sorted. If not easily doable... fuel cans.

Not ideal, but might not be too bad. My experience is with an XJ (Jeep Cherokee) and supposedly 18 gal tank. The XJ gets worse mileage than the Bronco will, and I've never had an issue with fuel range. Most off road trips aren't all that many miles when on dirt, and on road trips you can get gas. The XJ gets less than 15 mpg on the road, so likely around the same range as a 2dr Bronco, and never been an issue. Only remember carrying extra fuel once, on a long UT trip, and never did use it.
