Matt is a big help with recovery during the event, as is Rory from Moab Motorsports and Casey's OffRoad. Karnage Welder and 23Diesel also assist with trail fixes, and my friend Mike vacations that week and spends it all volunteering for trail repairs. Lots going on :)
We spent 6 weeks in Ouray this summer and everything was open. Very low snowpack this year. There have been some recent monsoon rains, so do watch the weather before heading out.
We had zero issues with our OBX on 34's, only used the rear locker a handful of times.
Airing down does a few things:
1> 100x better ride
2> better traction/footprint size
3> 100x less impact to the terrain (less likely to spin)
We are always in/out of town, but if you end up thru the REAL mecca of offroad (Hurricane UT) and need anything, let me know.
It's crazy that this is year 8....Rich commented last night during "trail hero tuesday" that year 1 was like 3 weeks of planning with just a few of us making it up as we went along. Now it's a damn production and 9 months of planning...and the team to make it appear like it was all planned ;)...
I use OnX as well, but it's crowdsourced, so only as good as whomever did the mapping. CartoTracks is $$, but I personally mapped many of the trails for them, so I know the routes are accurate. (The number of offshoot trails is endless.) The map Dixie has is great, but also 7ish years old and...
Moab doesn't shut down, but some businesses do limit their hours during the "winter". Trials are generally open, but snow multiplies the difficulty, and may make them impassible and dangerous.
Snow varies a ton, most of the winter is warm enough to not let it stick, but they do get an...
I'm in charge of Trail Hero event recovery (ie Trail Breaker, qualifying, RockCrawl, etc), and we've been part of the core event committee since day 1. My wife runs registration, be nice to her :D
I'll have my buggy on site, the 1996 FZJ80, and my wife will have her new OBX.
If you plan anything around Sand Hollow, hit up the Sand Hollow Trails FB Group. Pretty easy to find yourself over your head at SH and then on Matt's Youtube channel :) There are a bunch of maps for there too, the ONLY one that I consider accurate is CartoTracks. (I helped with mapping, so I...
From the few trails we've done thus far, the open/closed lists are accurate. Clear Lake should be open in a few days, only one short stretch of trail with snow over it, 200yds from the lake. Ran into two hikers who had dropped down from the ridge above and were taking ice baths :)
