What you’re describing it sounds like it’s slipping instead of fully engaging for some reason.
It’s the proportions, most 4 x 4’s are narrow and tall, this one is flat and wide, this seems to be exaggerated by the four-door version.
I wouldn’t describe it is huge, but it is on the upper limits of comfortable for most vehicle trails.
