Ford to recall 90,736 vehicles over engine valve issue, US regulators say

Looks like the defective valves that gave many issues here are an official recall now:

"Ford (F)will recall 90,736 vehicles as engine intake valves in the vehicles may break while driving, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on Saturday.

The recall impacts certain 2021-2022 Bronco, F-150, Edge, Explorer, Lincoln Nautilus, and Lincoln Aviator vehicles equipped with either a 2.7L or 3.0L Nano EcoBoost engine, the NHTSA said.

As part of the remedy, dealers will perform an engine cycle test and replace the engine as necessary, free of charge, the regulator said."

Well look at that! I still remember the data thread about these blown motors and certain members (I wonā€™t use the nickname for them here) visceral reactions to those of us who noted that this was not a ā€œnormal blown engine or twoā€. Sometimes you have to put your blinding fandom aside and get these concerns out there for Ford to see. Glad to see those who fall in this range can get it remedied and hopefully get rid of the doubt in the back of their minds!

How will this test do anything? Seems just a means of satisfying NHTSA. What? if it doesnā€™t drop a valve during this ā€œtestā€ youā€™re good to go?
@Ducati1098 do you have any insight to share?

I havenā€™t seen any additional information about this yet from Ford. Iā€™m sure itā€™ll be out shortly though, so Iā€™ll keep looking out for anything.

Often in a case like this, Ford may follow up the recall FSA with a separate "warranty extension" for a set period of time & mileage covering you in the event of a failure.

Example: you take your Bronco into your dealer and they test the engine and it passes the inspection and no service action is required, then it would close out this recall/fsa.

However the inspection would then trigger a "warranty extension" program that would kick in offering additional coverage IF you were to experience a failure from this specific part at a later date. Warranty extensions sometimes go up to as much as 100 or 150k miles.

Note: to those hardheads who won't go in for the inspection. Without taking your vehicle in for the initial inspection, you might not be eligible for any additional warranty extension coverage.

This is all hypothetical though, as the initial FSA (field service action) has not yet been released.

Essentially dealers will check for an engine cycle count. If the engine is under a certain cycle number, dealer techs will go through a service procedure to put stress on the engine. Don't know what that service procedure looks like yet because, as @SuperFord said, the FSA hasn't been released yet. But I'm assuming they're just putting RPMs through the engine in a specific way.

Ford is estimating that out of the 90,736 vehicles recalled, only 1% have the defect. The Bronco accounts for 22% of the recalled vehicles. So... rough napkin math and we're looking at around 200 Broncos that may have the issue. Maybe a more or less depending on where exactly the bad values ended up in the production line (for all we know... maybe most of the bad values ended up going into F-150 engines rather than Bronco engines). But overall a very small number.

Anyway, it all makes sense based on what we've seen about the issue. The vast majority of people haven't had the issue, and those that did the issue all had it within the first ~5,000 miles or so. Which is why Ford is looking specifically at engine cycle count to determine if it's affected or not. All the stars are aligning

EDIT- Link to the recall on NHTSA's website.

I'm over 69k and engine was towards the end of the date cycle. Hell, give me an extended warranty to 150k and I think I'd be good. Then again, engine replacement sounds good as well.

I hadn't even thought about my engine since the bad engines were blowing up. Would like to think I shouldn't have an issues at this point (knock on wood).

I am so glad that I had my Bronco built with the 2.3l. After doing my homework, and noticing trends within our shop (employed by my local Ford dealer), we, as a dealer, havenā€™t seen any mentionable major issues with the 2.3l. No phasers, no major recalls, etcā€¦. Plus, Iā€™m not a big fan of the belt driven oil pump. Just my 2 cents.

As a 21 owner with a 2.7, weā€™ve had zero problems (24,500 miles in). Iā€™m sure thereā€™s a ā€œwindowā€ of engines they know these bad parts went into. Hoping to not be in that grouping, although a new engine wouldnā€™t anger me, as long as it ainā€™t a rebuild lol

You just have to visit the Mustang and Ranger forums to find out the 2.3 has its own list of problems.

"Ford has been slapped with a class action lawsuit that claims coolant can leak into the cylinders of its popular 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-pot engine, found in several Ford and Lincoln models.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, alleges that coolant leaks into the engine can cause power loss, cylinder wall corrosion, oil dilution, contamination, and eventual engine failure. It also claims that insufficient coolant from these leaks could lead to engine overheating, potentially resulting in ā€œcatastrophic engine failures and potential engine firesā€."

I pulled this from NHTSA website document and narrows it down to a build date range. And yup Iā€™m right in the middle of it. šŸ˜¬šŸ˜”
