Greetings! I've got a wildtrak on order, but was curious if anyone knew if the 2.7 in the bronco will be like the f150 setup, or like how the explorers were. I believe the water pump in the f150 (at least later models) had an external water pump, whereas the explorers had water pumps driven from timing chain (probably for packaging, but still sooooooo dumb imo).

I tried searching, but seems like something that's even hard to find with just straight google even.

I read somewhere that it is quite a major job.

The explorer (pre-'20) were transverse applications and did have the pump behind the timing cover. Just looked up a 2020 F150 parts diagram for the water pump and looks external to me. I would think the bronco would be the same and not like the transverse package.

Good luck! I had my "stretched" timing chains done by ford on my '13 explorer sport. $3k job, about 15 hours labor I think.

The pre-'20 Explorer never had the 2.7 V6. The 2.7 and 3.5 EcoBoost engines are completely and totally unrelated outside of the bellhousing pattern.

The 2.7 has an external water pump in both transverse and longitudinal applications.

Correct. This slipped my mind for some reason I was just thinking Ecoboost.

Let's just hope Ford didn't use plastic timing chain guides like Nissan did in early 2nd gen Xterras. Those puppies started to whine and it was might as well do the water pump while in there kind of job.

the 3.5 ecoboost in my explorer has plastic around metal tensioners/guides... but yeah, when I got it apart, I'm gonna just throw in a new timing set, and new tensioners/guides

That's the way old Subrus were.

While you were in there doing a timing belt, doing the water pump was zero extra time and like $120 in parts.

Could be worse like the 4.0L in my old explorer. Plastic guides front AND REAR. Engine has to come out to do timing chains/guides, and they were poor quality and failed prematurely.
