Update: Today the dealer called me and said he can't order a new engine because the Ford engineers need time to redesign it. So it's gonna be a while.
Definitely gotta make sure this is not just yet another "my dealer said....."

@flip thank you for helping us all out with the information. Are the part numbers now different from what @Bmadda posted?
The head assembly went from a -D to a -J and -G to -K so those are the updated numbers.

Do we know exactly when the part numbers switched and therefore after what point engines might have a higher liklihood of not being afflicted by the mysterious failure?

I think where we are going w/this is the changeover is happening now. Thats the reason for the parts hold

Thats what I was thinking but hoping it maybe already happened and the dealers might be a bit behind. My 2.7 was just built & shipped last week. Hoping to sneak by with revised parts, LOL.

I think based on this replacement info it will be even more interesting to see if any new engines blow after mid August. That might answer the question of when or about when the change over started. I would seem that any time now those with engines after about mid August should have been or will be showing up they have issues. Likewise what is really interesting is did they do this change ever again mid August on all the new bronco’s going out of the factory. Would seem like a major issue if they have suddenly decided there is a new engineering need for the engine given all of them produced up to this point. Obviously seems we do not yet have all the facts but I think watching the later produced engines to see if any more blow after mid August

Yes, let's ban the 2.7L Bronco!

Society is much too litigious.
I hate frivolous lawsuits as much as the next guy, but lemon laws are okay in my book.

Lemon laws are basically "make it right in a reasonable time, or buy the vehicle back"

It'll be interesting to see how many 2.7s get build dates in this (supposed, hopefully) upcoming scheduling round. If there is an engineering update in process, it would seem that 2.7s wouldn't be scheduled for builds unless that update has been approved and released.

I agree, but in this case, there are law protecting consumers from this exact issue, and manufacturer's take notice when lemon laws are filed.

We're piling speculation upon speculation here. Among the things we don't know:
  • If there's an issue (although there is certainly mounting evidence)
  • If the issue is confined to engines produced in a particular time frame
  • If all produced 2.7L engines have the underlying cause
  • If the issue is design or manufacturing
  • If there's already a fix
  • If there's any kind of freeze on 2.7L production/scheduling
  • If the part number changes have anything to do with this issue whatsoever
We have five sources of information, from most to least definitive:
  • Ford (which has been completely :censored:)
  • Friendly dealers on this site
  • "My dealer said" from customers who have experienced the engine blow-ups
  • Compiled data from forum users
  • Other social media gossip
It's awesome that we are pulling together data in this thread, but we aren't going to be able to come to any firm conclusions without Ford saying something on the record, either to us or to the dealers. And you figure they will have to, one way or another, since there are still ~25 people here waiting on an engine replacement. Don't think all of those can get replaced without any kind of broader acknowledgment, if Ford thinks the blowups are indicative of an underlying issue.
