Also found the notes from the mechanic who replaced the engine. He didn't take the old engine apart, but used a scope and indicated a valve had crashed in cylinder 6. The service writer had told me they didn't know what happened to the old engine, but the notes show that they did know.

Remember, there's only a 3-year 36,000 mi warranty.

Ford is playing the odds and hoping all those engines that may be on the border make it another 30k :)

This is the new engine stamp. I don't have a pic of the old one. Ford took that engine back.

That looks totally different. I guess it's cuz it's a F-150 thing but I don't see an AA or an AB...is it that EC?

I did not know that. Thanks for setting me straight. Almost makes me wonder if an extended warranty is worth it (aside from the electronics I suppose)

Yeah, it says EC. Not even sure what that means.

Looks like the new engine was built on the 320th day of 2021. That puts me well into November, so it should be better valves.

Bill,
THe EC shows that this engine design has been around a very very long time. Thanks to another forum member that educated us on the numbering system . -AA rolled to AB all the way to AZ over time. AFTER -AZ it became -BA and so it starts again through BZ skip forward a long , long way and DZ rolls to EA,then EB and NOW EC.

The bronco part number for its engine had just started life as an -AA and after one revision is now -AB.

Have a nice weekend. George

Service replacement parts have completely different numbers remember. You would need the microfiche to tell how many supersessions that number has had. It is interesting that the prefix is the same as Bronco replacements we have seen...this was from an f-150 correct? Maybe @flip can check the fiche and see if 21 Bronco, and 21 f-150 both supersede to this number?

yes , you are absolutely correct, so the "EC" suffix is for the replacement part number ml3e 6006

yeah w brittle valves they could have more than one failure mode as you mention one of these would be valve break at the keeper notch, and Ford svc tech diagnostics have reported this mode more than once, and prob some cases hard to tell

it's a good question, when did Lima start using the new valves ?, so far the starting point is vague - we really have much better idea when they started the new head assemblies, prob started w new engine rev -AB, which we can see in the Nov/Dec ebd labels - and for sure the new valves had to be included in the new head assemblies, but did Lima start using the new valves before then ? probably, imo

last summer I believe they did have one or two defective batches of brittle valves which are causing the bunches of blown engines we see in the '2-month containment' range - but thing is, the original valves, when made correctly, were definitely good enough to run without causing blown engines - we see this w all the working engines before ebd 21159 and during the 'clear gap' - so the end of blown engines w ebd 21224 does not mean Lima started using the new valves at that time - they just finished using up the bad valves - then Lima may have continued for a while with non-defective original valves, before they started using the new valves -

seems to me the original valves, when non-defective, are good enough to be reliable

I have a 2021 Bronco Badlands 2.7L with 900 miles. My EBD is "21224" with engine part # MB3E-6007-AA. To-date, sounds like there have been (3) engine failures w/the "21224" build-date. Can't help but wonder...am I next???
Does anybody know how many 2.7L engines were built on "21224" (Aug. 12, 2021)??
Ford Bronco 2.7L blown engine failure list . . 68 so far [Updated: December 13, 2022] 1645291843564

I'm sure if there was the slightest thing to worry about Ford would have already sent you a telegram.

Thanks
You get a rough idea from the sequence#'s
- in OP table three blown seq#'s run 120196 to 120480
- also your# 120300

Appears Lima made at least ~ 300 that day
- if they started w 001, might be ~ 500

Thanks Joseph...appreciate your input here! Any suggestions on "how" I get more information re: the total # of engines that have failed with the 21224 build-date? Also, what do you think the odds are that mine will fail?
