Started the process of relocating the fuel tank to the rear. Capacity is 17gal same as stock. This will allow for a true triangulated 4link setup. Also it allows for trail repair of a fuel pump without dropping the tank. The bottom of the tank sits flush with the bumper. Also picked up a muffler skid plate from RockHard4x4 will only need minor modifications to work with the tank and maintain the clearance. I have the pigtail harnesses to make a plug and play harness extension for the pump. The fuel line and splices should be in soon. Goal is to have the evap system work like factory with no evap codes.

Wish there was more room for a larger tank! I wonder if I could skip the 4 link and then just add this tank as an add on for existing tank!

Would be relatively easy to add this tank and skid setup as an auxiliary tank Iā€™ll post a list materials I used once I get it finished.

More progress todayā€¦got the tank dropped and determined the lines, splices, and connections Iā€™ll need to make it work. The oem pump flange from Boyd is perfect. Pump height is spot on too, wonā€™t need to extend the support rods. Should have the tank back from the welder in a few days. Hopefully if everything gets delivered this week. Final install will be this weekend.

I like the concept very much. I wheel rocks almost exclusively wondering how this set up will hold up. I think back to my 1992 Blazer which had the tank with a skid plate in this same location. My under carriage front to back on the Bronco is scraped by boulder. Watching to see how this works out. All the best.šŸ˜Ž

Following with great interest. That area behind the rear axle seems ripe for various uses: fuel tank, water tank, under floor cargo hold, etc.

One thing though, I'd rather not increase the exhaust noise too much, when the large stock muffler is removed in favor of a likely smaller muffler located elsewhere under the body. I wonder if there is any reasonably quiet alternate muffler for that application?

Pretty badass. The rear floor of the Bronco is removable? Or is that the jack storage pocket removed?

XJ also has a gas tank in the same spot. Itā€™s metal as well with a skid plate. Has held up well for me on the Rubicon

I run the AFE hi-mount exhaust, works well, no drone at all

Has a small storage bin, it may clear the pump, if not a simple bolt in cover plate will be used in its place

Any concern with a rear end collision rupturing the fuel tank?

Wasn't that the issue with the Pinto back in the day... a rear end collision would push the tank into the differential causing it to puncture.

Not trying to piss on your parade, because it looks geat. Just asking the question. I'm guessing the tank is pretty robust.

Going off the Motobilt kits for the jeeps, this is a similar design.
I think itā€™ll be fine, with the metal cloak bumper, the 3/16 skid and being surround by the frame. Although I will say this is not a daily driver, strictly a trail truck. Also the tank is pretty high up no where near the differential.

The problem with the pinto was that Ford made them so perfectly that the filter neck was mass produced from steel and fit precisely. In a rear and collision the filter neck would sheer and spark igniting the fumes. The recall fix was to cut a section off and add a rubber hose so it would comply in an accident. And since then all vehicles are built with a rubber filler neck for that reason.

The more you know
