Well, that's not quite true. You may get away with it, but...

"California sales tax generally applies to the sale of vehicles, vessels, and aircraft in this state from a registered dealer. Use tax applies to the sale of vehicles, vessels, and aircraft purchased from non-dealers (for example, private parties) or from outside California for use in this state. Generally, although the rates are the same, it is the responsibility of the purchaser to report and pay use tax if the seller did not collect an amount for California sales or use tax from the purchaser."
You will not find a registered dealer who will not collect said tax from you if you take delivery in-state. PERIOD. You can try and gamble your way around this but a dealer is obligated by law to collect sales tax for a vehicle purchase with delivery taking place in the state. Many dealers have arrangements in place to take delivery over a state line or will help arrange a transport delivery service to effect transporting the vehicle to your home out of state.

For example, this took me two seconds to find one...

https://www.sunnyvalevw.com/purchasing-a-vehicle-for-use-outside-ca.htm

I have worked with dealerships in my area that have made many arrangements for delivery of a vehicle in Tahoe on the Nevada side for just this purpose. There is nothing "not quite true" unless you are dealing with a dealer who wants to risk their business in the state. But, hey, as we know, many dealers are not exactly above board in their practices...

I'm confused by what point you are trying to make. The link you gave is about an out of state buyer buying a car from a California dealer and how to get around the sales tax.

Is that what you are talking about? I thought you were talking about a Californian buying a car out of state and bringing it back in.

Not sure why a Florida guy would order from Long Beach, CA....but it looks like you didn't vet Caruso Ford correctly for your Day 4 reservation. You have zero leverage and they have little to no incentive to make you happy. You aren't local. Won't be a repeat customer. Won't service your truck there. Won't get a Christmas card from you.

It does suck but the 7\14 res was always your best (maybe only) shot at an early Bronco. You still have 3 weeks for them to back out that order. I bet it comes through for you.

There's the part I missed!

I ordered my Audi TT from the Boston area and had it shipped to Seattle. It had nothing to do with saving money, but it worked out great.

something is strange here. My interactions and all that I’ve read here with Ford corporate Bronco folks have been good and resolutions have come quick...

For some inexplicable reason, Caruso is REFUSING TO CONVERT MY RESERVATION TO ORDER. Their stated reason is that they are afraid I am going to export the car to another country or something like that.
Perhaps telling them you worked for Vandelay Industries was a mistake? 😄

If OP lives in Florida, what was the reason for reservation in California and was the revervation originally made with Caruso. I'm not a attorney by any means, but if reservation was originally made with Caruso Ford and $100 Deposit rendered, can they legally refuse to sell OP his Bronco.

So there wasn’t a mad rush on the dealerships when the order banks opened, and they were allowed to convert orders at a pace that made sense.
I am talking about a situation that is the subject of the thread. If you cannot get your order in by March 19 because Ford has not

We were planning to move to Oahu (not happening now). Dealer is near Long Beach CA port. We have shipped vehicles back and forth from there in the past.

I think you just have to tough it out. If you made choices looking for a deal, then enjoy the savings of the deal and just wait the extra couple of months. Getting your new ride in August vs October isn't going to make any difference at Thanksgiving...or 2 years from now. I would fear that moving things around this late in the game jeopardizes the 3/19 window and getting in the May sort. Roll with it and enjoy your new Bronco(s).

I am currently in week 2 of waiting for Ford to change my "in-store" order over to a new dealer. I was told to create a new reservation and they would move my Day 1 timestamp over to this new reservation. Hopefully the switch will occur in another week or so. I am saving $2k by switching to a different dealer. It's stupid how the dealer can lock up your reservation. This is why the Tesla model of ordering is the future. Order online, price is set, no negotiation, schedule the pickup and you are done.

I would start with informing Ford that your reserved dealers refuses to sell you a Bronco. If that doesn't get you anywhere, sometimes a simple letter crafted by a attorney may help Caruso Ford change their mind about selling you the Bronco you reserved with them. Most dealers try to avoid a lawsuit, as their reputation doesn't help them if they have to go to court.
