The question/problem is for the two door though? They have one for the later two door Jeep JKs so I guess we’ll see.

A second tank would have to go behind the rear axle where that big assed muffler is. Already some aftermarket exhausts remove that muffler, which would create some space.

As I recall the tank on my 1st gen was small but I had the aux tank that helped. For any 4x4 exploring gas was an issue so the jerry cans got used.

At these prices adapting behavior sounds pretty good.

I've ridden bikes long distance many times and I'm used to planning routes for fuel every 100-150 miles. Having a family in a car results in about the same thing.

18 or 20? You have a 17 now. I ran mine dry on purpose to see how far past "empty" I could get and it took 17 gallons to fill. With the gas mileage, getting 1 to 3 extra gallons will only get you 18 to 54 miles extra. I think a better replacement tank and aux tank can do much better and maybe get close to 30 gallons total.

I have read other threads and posts about it. The only way to do it is EXPENSIVE!! Because of sensors and vapor recovery, sending units etc. You would have to replace the original tank with a larger one, if Ford could have I suspect they would have. Add another complete tank for a dual tank set up with all the same systems in place. The one way I think most simple but probably dangerous? Gerry cans on either side of the spare with a hard plumbed transfer pump mounted underneath. You could ad 10 gallons. But what happens if you get hit??
@802Bronco Hit the nail on the head. Simple for diesels, logistical nightmare for gas.
I brought a F150 off the lot a few years ago for a great price but with smaller 26 gallon tank rather than 36. I had a good working relationship with my local service department - and they also do upfitting. We spent a lot of time researching options but nothing panned out in regards to dual / auxiliary / reserve tank. Fortunately in my case the OEM upgrade was possible so we did that. Out the door it was roughly $1,100 dollars, even with a refund for reusable parts.

Every 2 door owner should Google “The Serenity Prayer”.

I just got back from a round trip from MT to AZ and back. 1200 miles each way. First long trip with the Bronco. Towing a camper. Averaged around 11 mpg (ouch). So…yeah…..I know all about that damn tiny tank under my 2 door.

But you know what? After the first few stops I learned to embrace what I couldn’t change. Stopping more frequently for gas gave me more time to get out and stretch than I otherwise would take. Made the trip less fatiguing.

But I’m no fool. To keep the stress at bay I had a full gas can strapped to the side of the camper.

For when this happened (which happened more than once)…

I'd like to say replace the exhaust with an aftermarket the moves the muffler from the rear to middle of the vehicle and install a fuel cell (or equiv.) where the old muffler was - lots of room. But the Ford Pinto comes to mind. 🚙 🔥

Yep, Never had a car where 0 miles to empty meant the engine quit running. But how much grace did they really give you? Finding out empirically is annoying and painful.
