Hey everyone,

I thought I would share a couple of versions of an accessory mounting point / handle delete I designed and printed for the center console grab handle.

I have been looking to make a forged carbon part and thought this might be something cool to try it on (I know, totally unnecessary but hey). A 3d model that I liked was the first step in the process.

This took more revisions than I care to think about, but I am pretty happy with the part/console fit and the functionality it adds. I used this on a recent trip to northern Michigan and it held my iPad mini which I used to display my Gaia maps. It got bumped around pretty good and I was surprised at how well it held up.

I learned all my modeling skills from Youtube University so even though my Fusion 360 file might be a bit of a mess, I shared it on Makerworld for those who want to change up the model some. If you do, please just post a remix so everyone else can benefit.

For those who want to print them, here are the links to the files on Makerworld:

Version 1

Version 2

Note: Due to the shape of the object I have had difficulty getting a print that does not have some stringing on the back without using a short layer height. I did not spend a TON of time trying to tweak the printer settings so others might be able to get better results.

Brian

I think it's time I ditch the grab handle for this, great design and as others have said thanks for sharing the file.
Agree in general on ditching the grab handle on the center console. It is one of the design elements that look cool but is useless in practicality. A very short person or child in the passenger seat with the seat moved forward might find it beneficial. But most adults sitting with their back against the backrest will find that the grab handle is out of reach unless they have orangutan arms. The circumstances where someone would want to grab a hold is counter to leaning forward to do so.

This substitute is as good as candidate as any with the added functionality to accommodate mounts for accessories.

This is very cool! I have a similar single arm setup on the side there using the RAM mount they sell that's designed to replace the oem screw. I like this and the options a lot better.

Nice, I did something similar. I'll have to find the file and share.

I’ve been modeling and 3D printing for over 12 years and your design and print look good. I can’t really say that for most of the prints/designs I see people trying to sell.

I just hope you didn’t print that out of PLA. ASA is what you want for something like that.

Good idea, let's see how long till someone rips it off and posts for sale on Amazon or eBay.

I used superclamps to achieve the same effect. The elevation of the grab handles allows me to use shorter arms.

Thanks Heckler, I spent a bunch of time working on it so I appreciate the feedback.

I have been using PLA as I have mainly been prototyping and tweaking the fit up to this point. I agree that there are likely much better options for material out there. That being said, the PLA held up well on my test trip.

Yea I get using PLA for prototyping as it is easiest to print with and holds its dimensional accuracy well. For that purpose it’s fine (and inexpensive too) but in a car over time it will fade and look really bad not to mention if it gets really hot it will melt. ASA on the other hand is UV resistant and can take the heat you will see inside a car in the middle of summer. Nice job!

I am down for purchase if someone makes this for sale.
I added the .stl file to the Makerworld pages linked above. You should be able to upload that to a site like PCB way or some other printing service and have them print one off. I uploaded one real quick and their initial quote was like $38.

I am just a dude messing around with CAD and my printer. I am not really set up to sell anything myself at this time so if you can find a service to print it I made the files available.

Glad you like the design.

I’m getting ready to print this and gathering the ram balls. Since there are so many options which ram ball is that? In the description it says 1/4-20x??? I just don’t want to buy the wrong ram ball. Thanks.
