Bronco Raptor Driving in Snow Storm - First Experience

Heading North on I-71 (North of Columbus) on 11-19-2022. There were many accidents and slow-downs.

Bronco Raptor did a good job. When I first came upon the bad roads, I was still in normal mode. Minimal fishtailing a couple different times. But then I put it in the slippery GOAT mode And never had an issue.

The only thing that would freak me out is when a huge gust of wind came. This happened at least 3-4 times and every time, the vehicle really seemed to shift. It just felt especially bad compared to a normal vehicle.
I’m sure this is a direct result of driving a large high-riding Bronco.

Was also pleased to get 16 MPG average over about 100 mile trip.

Other than that, everything was fine.

The wind gust piece is an issue for most box-shaped vehicles unfortunately.

Glad it handled well; I never had an issue in my Badlands and thought the vehicle handled amazingly in harsh winter conditions.

Not sure I’d be filming a video on my phone while driving in those conditions though

If you're living in a snow belt, I'd love to see that car with genuine Ice Tires like Bridgestone Blizzak or Goodyear Ultragrip with the special ice compounds. No fancy off-road tread will work on Ice, but short of chains or studds, those ICE tires are great. When i lived Upstate NY, I always had sets of 4 studded snows or compound Ice Tires. On at Thanksgiving, off by Easter!

Secondly, that 4A setting in the Advanced Transfer Case, or the "Slippery" setting in GOAT, should be killers in the snow . . . And Ice. As Im sure you know, there are alot of careless fools who drive their 4WD too fast in the snow, forgetting that moving forward is the easy part. Its stopping, turning where the rubber meets the road. Ill look forward to more stories in the snow.

Oh, you don’t need a blizzard to turn on you flashers. We had a few this week while we were getting flurries and they were driving 30mph under the speed limit with their flashers on. Better off staying home. Glad they had their flashers on as no one was expecting the to be going that slow!

I live in a place that rarely gets blizzards. Is it protocol to drive with hazards on?

I generally use my hazards to let drivers know my brakes = we're coming to a crawl when the highway is backed up or if I'm driving below the speed limit so they don't get up to me and have to hit their brakes. Seems pretty common here in Michigan if a driver is going 20ish below limit.

Awesome! Considering all Raptors are sails (compared to a Prius), that zeems normal.

If you're driving in a Blizzard, you'd be hoing slow and flashers may help faster drivers not run you over. IME, driving in driving snow on a highway is like boating at night: you may know where you're going, but its the other car/boat going a little faster or slower that can kill you, you into him. Him into you. Also, everything has to be gentle, smooth. Abrupt braking or turning can spun you out or start a chain reaction accident. A less capable car that starts slipping uphill could cause you to either stop, or pass them, hopefully safely. Its better not to be there, but a caravan of experienced winter drivers on I87 from Glens Falls to Plattsburgh can make the trip, if none of them are trying to prove something. Moderate speed, keep the momentum. There are many who find the safest way to get behind a snow plow and enjoy the 30mph trip.

All that said, I'd often drive in the snow. Ice? Get off the road.

The worse sh-tuff gets, the better I feel about driving in snow. Virginia Beach...no snow ever...I had to speed up and slow down to avoid vehicles spinning out of control. Chicago to DC after flights were cancelled during a blizzard, plow trucks and 4X4s lining the ditches. No other traffic, 70 MPH in a POS rental car.
Not a common belief, but I don't think snow removal should start until snow has stopped. Total paradigm shift from we can protect you from the weather to we will clean up after. The latter is more realistic.
