I yanked my 6 gauge wire out of my jeep before I traded it in. I have plans to put a shelf in the back with a DC to DC converter to charge a Lithium Battery. I will have my ARB Twin back there, and distribution for a fridge and ham radio.

Ran the wire through the firewall:

It runs along the drivers side cable tray (which surprisingly isn't in loom):

it pops up in the back along the drivers side until i get my shelf.

Then I RTV'd the grommet I took out to make sure no water comes in when you splash in the puddles or wash the engine bay.

And it runs on a 80 AMP circuit breaker. 80 amps cause the extra engine bay heat was tripping my 50 AMP when I ran my air compressor.

And the semi-finished product has voltage at the back!

Coming soon... shelf and Lithium battery!

Let me know what you think!

I ran 6 gauge as well but I followed the frame and put a plug next to my hitch. Having power in the back comes in handy.

yeah this is to run stuff inside the vehicle. haven't really needed power outside in the past.

Man that wire looks beefy and it's only 6 gauge? I can't imagine how big the 0/1 guage is that you are supposed to use for winches.

Where did you connect your 6AWG ground?
i ran it all the way back up to the battery and used the main body ground right off the battery. technically you could chassis ground in the trunk, but this Siamese cable already had it.

this 6 gauge has a double jacket. the standard wire cover and another clear layer that combines the 2 wires. my winch only came with 2 gauge, which is indeed big, but not quite a big as the 0/1.

I had almost the exact same setup in my former Land Cruiser, connecting to a portable battery box that I built. I still have the box, and it will be a weekend project soon to get the wiring done. Thanks for posting the pics, it really helps get me motivated to finish this little project.

Here's the battery box I built. It uses a LiFePO4 battery with a Redarc controller, has alternator and solar inputs, six USB ports a 12V port and an inverter. I'm going to add USB-C next, and a third socket output for larger power needs. I love this solution because it powers anything in the back, and is also portable. We've taken the box out at campsites, at the beach, lots of places. It really comes in handy.

You're right about the chassis ground, but many people make the mistake to not upgrade the factory battery ground cable to something bigger. Makes a difference 👍🏻

Fantastic write up! Will likely use this as a guide when I finally get around to additional power + fridge

What kind of capacity does that battery have?

I'm doing similar for power for my compressor, don't like having to open the hood every time I air up.

It's a FuelZero 50ah battery, which lasts like a 100ah marine. It will hold a full charge for months, really impressed by it.

Do you have a suggestion for an upgrade? Or is it something you built yourself?
