I have around 1600 miles on my Big Bend 2.7. I decided to change the oil ASAP after my 1000-mile breakin. We have been camping, and this is the first chance I've gotten.

This video from another thread is a good reference:

I had trouble getting a filter...you can't just walk in to O'Reilly and ask for a 2021 Bronco filter. I got the part # from Ford and O'Reilly had them, but not OEM. But Wal-Mart had Motorcraft, and had one left. But question for those who know: why does the new one not have the black caps? Is this normal?

Anyway...I removed the skid plate-factory BB plastic one-using a 15mm socket to take out 6 bolts. My 15yo handled socket duties.

Confession: I haven't changed my own oil in years, so I've never used the plastic plugs. It was easy to take off (a quarter turn), and they weren't joking about it coming out quickly.

I also have never seen the top-of-engine filters, so I watched the video to find it. I didn't have a set of large sockets with me camping, so I had to use Vise-grips to get the housing off. No trouble.

I didn't install the new filter because of my questions about the caps, but I changed the rings. As in the video, I cut the small one with a razor knife to get it off. Getting the new one on there required some patience to be sure.

All that was left to do was reinsert the plug, rebolt the skid plate, and pour in 7 quarts of Mobil 1 synthetic. Checked for leaks and all is good.

A follow-up question: does the Bronco not have an oil pressure readout?

Nice, looks almost exactly like my Grand Cherokee filter. I'd not worry about the different color caps, just different manufacturer I'd guess.

On the follow-up question, it may be buried in the screen menus (like it is on my Mustang). If not, some tools like DashCommand may be able to read it for you.

O'Reilly should have had it, they just didn't dig hard enough. At least it wasn't one of my tms, I'd have to have a teaching moment.

Different colors would have been fine. But there were no caps on the new filter.

Round dots are parts that come with the filter. If you get the cap it comes with all the yellow square parts. Color of the filter ends shouldn't matter as long as the height and diameter are the same. The politically correct answer from the dealer is, "you should only use Ford or Motorcraft parts on your Ford vehicle OR parts that meet OE engineering specifications."

I got an OEM Motorcraft 2062 a. But it didn't have the black plastic caps at either end of the filter as shown here:

Ford Bronco A First Oil Change Experience on 2021 Bronco – Using OEM Oil Filter 20210722_124246

the new filter is laying down while the old is standing up. Note the black plastic cap facing the camera on the old one vs the bare ends of the new.

That replacement filter doesn’t look right to me. I have done my 2.7s several times and the Motorcaft filters always looked like your original. Maybe you transfer the ends now? I would have hesitated too. It’s ridiculous how fast and far the oil shoots out!

Automakers will specify a visual difference in factory installed filters vs replacement filters.

Be careful tightening abs lessening the filter housing. They will crack and then it’s a trip to the dealer with your fingers crossed they have one in stock. Ask me how I know………

Word of caution buying filters from Walmart, always check the filter to make sure it is what you are buying. I've seen it a few times where people will swap the cheapest filter in the Mobile 1 box. Cheap price to sell your soul for :sneaky:

As difficult as it is to take off the small o-ring and put a new one on; makes you wonder if you're local Jiffy Lube even bothers changing it.

@Administrator Could you change the title? I DID in fact use an OEM filter. It seems they do not *always* have the black caps on them.

Motorcraft = Ford, so you're good there, and PLEASE don't go after the oil filter cover with visegrips, Crescent wrench, or open-end wrench...you WILL bork it up eventually...socket or box-end wrench only...ask ME how I know
