Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) has disrupted the global auto industry, and is easily the most valuable automaker on earth. However, investors are also giving the company a lot of credit for what they expect it will do, not what it's already done. In coming years, the company will need to spend enormous amounts of money to build out its manufacturing capacity, while continuing to invest in technology and its products to continue growing.

On the Dec. 8 edition of "The Wrap" on Motley Fool Live, host Jason Hall made a bold proposition: Tesla should acquire Ford (NYSE: F). Not only would this go a long way toward jump-starting the company's growth needs by acquiring Ford's massive global manufacturing footprint, but Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk would gain a leg up in fully disrupting the auto industry. Only this time, with the manufacturing heft of one of the industry's heavyweights.

Ford doesn’t need them, they will do it on their own and won’t be bothered by the Tesla hype.

Besides, Ford is invested in Rivian.
De-Nial is a River-ian too.

It isn't a terrible idea. To piggyback on @Carolina Jim thought on another thread, Ford might transition to being strictly a truck company. Ford could retain the truck segment and selloff the other brands and the capacity to build those brands. Ford becomes more agile focusing on their core business while Tesla gains manufacturing capacity.

Tesla is a different animal compared with the Big 3. For one, Tesla’s business model is much like Apple, where they control every aspect of the product. Listen to the complaints of Tesla owners awaiting repairs after a collision. Tesla is more about producing parts and pieces for new cars than for repairable parts. Try rebuilding a totaled Tesla...they won’t sell you the specialized parts and pieces needed for rebuild.
