Has anyone had an issue with their front axle? I noticed after 400 miles that my boot on the front right was twisted and slinging grease - so I took it in to the dealer. They are replacing the entire axle under warranty. I don't know the reason or cause (only daily road driving so far), but they seemed to know what to do pretty quick.

By entire, do you mean the whole front axle including the diff, or just that side CV axle?

Hard to tell from the picture, but it just looks like a boot failure, especially if you didnā€™t notice noise or binding while driving.

Don't know. I didn't notice any ride or performance issues - just saw it when I was walking around the front with the wheels turned to the right.

By "entire" I don't know. That's the wording the service tech used. I haven't picked it up yet after repair.

Probably meant entire CV axle on that side instead of replacing the boot.

The boot wasn't installed properly or it was made incorrectly. Either it was installed twisted or the air in the boot wasn't equalized. There is enough grease in the CV joint that the boot can be installed inflated or in a state of suction. They need to be burped, like Tupperware :giggle:, they must be installed in a completely neutral relaxed position. .

Source, I've installed thousands of boots at my shop and have seen this happen a few times, in every case listed above.

Once the boot goes, the knuckle becomes a question mark due to debris getting in there and doing damage. So changing the CV axle assy is very common in these scenarios.

The whole axle shaft. Probably overkill , because warranty and replacing just the boot and/or joint is more work than just installing the whole axle. The joint is most likely fine.

Big difference in entire axle and a CV axle shaft. Of course they would replace that side CV axle with a boot failure, but entire axle alludes to something else altogether.

The title to the thread is axle failure and entire replacement. Iā€™m thinking boot failure and CV replacement is more accurate. Big difference.
