Once the boot goes, the knuckle becomes a question mark due to debris getting in there and doing damage. So changing the CV axle assy is very common in these scenarios.
Not so much :giggle:. If you catch a torn boot soon enough, most likely the CV joint is fine. Centrifugal force keeps moisture and debris out of the joint. I've seen CV boots completely torn in half, the joint almost dry of grease and upon disassembly of the joint, it was perfectly fine. (y)

Has anyone had an issue with their front axle? I noticed after 400 miles that my boot on the front right was twisted and slinging grease - so I took it in to the dealer. They are replacing the entire axle under warranty. I don't know the reason or cause (only daily road driving so far), but they seemed to know what to do pretty quick.

My drivers side outer boot also failed, it was a small pinch or cut where the clamp attached around the boot. I noticed grease on the inside of the tire/wheel the day after I brought it home.
Dealer replaced entire left axel.

I would agree. On my 03 Yota... I would just change the entire thing because time and effort. Note: My Yota half shafts were cheap after core.

Big difference in entire axle and a CV axle shaft. Of course they would replace that side CV axle with a boot failure, but entire axle alludes to something else altogether.

The title to the thread is axle failure and entire replacement. I’m thinking boot failure and CV replacement is more accurate. Big difference.
If that CV shaft failed enough to twist the boot I'd think it would have made a lot of noise.

Yes, which is why I said in a post way up there that it is most likely just a boot failure. I guess we don’t know since the OP doesn’t know, but most likely a loose boot from the factory and just easier to replace that side CV axle. No axle failure and no entire axle replacement. I guess we’ll find out when he picks it up.

I'll fill you in when I get it back & speak with the service tech again.

Today, yes, but back in the day (70s-80s) it was cheaper to replace individual joints and boots. CV axles weren't as common then.

I have engaged the 4wd, but not to do anything other than turn it on for a slippery road.
Did you hear any strange noises?

Checking your CV boots is something we should all be adding to our pickup checklist.

There is one person on you tube who's boot wasn't clamped properly and it came loose while off roading in the mud and it got all in the CV Joint.
