Who's rocking a roof-mounted awning on their Bronco? What brand/type are you running and why does it reign supreme?

I have the free spirit 270 awning. There’s really no way to quantify the “best” awning because it’s all about tradeoffs- strength, weight, size, ease of use, and price. If you make one better, you make another worse.

I felt the free spirit was a good balance of all of these. It’s not the best in any of these categories, but I do think it is well rounded. They say it’s good in winds up to 25 mph, weighs about 37 lbs, sets up quickly, and the price is reasonable.

I have a 4’ Rooftop Awning made by Roam. It is mounted at the rear of my TrailRax half-rack. It fits the width of the Bronco perfectly, and gives enough cover to utilize the tailgate area out of the sun and rain.

It sets up in minutes and can be put away in about the same time.

I too have the FSR 270 awning. I have a gen 1, but they recently released a V2 awning and awning room. I like how the awning has more squared corners than some others, which increases square footage relative to size. It sets up fast, is freestanding and the strap to secure it in the open position is always attached to the awning vs coming off with each takedown like some others. The awning room also a full wraparound enclosure with access doors to get in to your vehicle. There's an optional floor as well.

I have two FSR tents, a 270 awning, awning room, and annex for one of the tents. They build a quality product. The first run of their V1 awnings had a bad weld on the rear most support arm. Mine broke the the first time I opened it. I welded it up and have had no other issues with the awning. This turned out to be an issue they identified and send everyone who ordered an awning before the welds were fixed a new rear arm. I never even reached out to FSR, but received a replacement arm anyway. I have also spoke with FSR on the phone for order things and can only say good things about their customer service.

My only complaint is the 270 awning room velcros to the awning, which slows install time and I suspect the velcro would wear out with heavy use.

I also have a 180 degree OVS awning and wall kit on my trailer. This is also a quality product, but I've never dealt with their customer service so I can't speak to that. This awning sets up fast and is freestanding as well. It does have two attached legs if you want some more support in poor weather, and has two additional separate legs which are used if you put the wall kit up. This awning uses a quality zipper to attach the wall which greatly speeds up setup time. The wall only runs the outer perimeter of the awning though, which works out well with my trailer setup but there's definitely times a full enclosure would be nice.

I've got the Roam. The biggest deciding factor for me was that it's one of the few awnings that extends out 8'. We use it for camping, and tailgating. If we didn't use for tailgating, I would have gotten a 270.

Digging the simplicity of that, do you have a photo of it closed? i want to gauge how high the awning sticks up above the trailrax, i have chase lights on that last load bar that i don't want to cover up.

OVS Nomadic 270LTE from Amazon. Not saying it's the best but suits my needs, budget, and weight. One camping trip in the rain made me get one, $450 and 35lbs. Option for driver or passenger side. Not easy to install, I purchased more mounting brackets for stability. Mounted it to the frame of my FSR Aspen Lite RTT. Easy to deploy and put away by myself. I installed some battery powered strip led's underneath for lighting. Deploying the legs aren't necessary as it stays up by itself. I need to figure out a better way to put it on/off before the spring.

I have the carbon fiber Roofnest Litewing Awning mounted to my TrailRax Roof Rack. As I have a 2 door, I went with the smaller size. At 70 sq ft of 270 degree coverage and at only 30 lbs including the rigid aluminum cover, It was the lightest freestanding 270 degree awning out there.

It included a usb lighting harness that perfectly illuminates underneath the awning.

I have no regrets as it perfectly fits my needs. That being said if I had a four door I would choose an awning that has available wall kit for my awning, which the Litewings do not.

Thanks for the trailrax awning bracket photo, that helps a ton. My current RTT only leave at most 3/4" between the trailrax side rails and the tent frame. So I'd end up having to raise the tent up a bit. I saw another thread where someone used a flat bracket and some polyurethane spacers instead.
