April 7, 2022 Update
@kodiakisland and I went wheeling again today on another fun day trip in NWA. It was a little cold (50 F) and quite windy (10-15 mph steady, with gusts over 30 mph), but despite the less than favorable conditions, @kodiakisland drove with his hard top off (typical for him, actually, since he removed it in February) and I drove with my soft top down.
Warloop Road
We started the afternoon wheeling up Warloop Road from the west starting in Mountainburg and heading almost due east to pavement at Old Locke Road.
Warloop Road is part of the Trans America Trail that cuts through Arkansas. It is a 5-mile jaunt up a fun, 4x4 trail with a decent rise in elevation. It was muddy, rocky, and off-camber enough to make you want to run in 4 Low with both lockers engaged, although it really wasnāt required for most of the trail.
Below is a good POV video on YouTube made by a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon owner ā one of @kodiakislandās friends ā which is queued up to start at the harder section of the trailā¦
Maximum pitch during the ascent was 18 degrees, and maximum roll was 8 degrees, per the Broncoās off-road menu in the instrument panel display.
I donāt have any video from this section, but @kodiakisland and I took several photos on the way back during our return descent heading west later this afternoonā¦
White Rock Mountain Recreation Area
After Warloop Road, we headed East-Northeast (ENE) to White Rock Mountain Recreation Area, which is a cool, little-known destination out in the middle of the Ozark National Forest.
Itās really beautiful, has a fantastic scenic overlook, and has even become a wedding destination for local couples.
This is the entrance to the recreation area, which is managed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service.
White Rock Mountain is 2,309 feet above sea level and received its name from the appearance of the lichen on the sheer bluffs that look white from a distance. It is known for its scenic overlook, but also has hiking trails, cabins for rental, a campground, picnic tables, and a general store.
This is the starting point for the scenic overlookā¦
Here are some of the views all along the rim trailā¦
This is one of the 3 cabins available for rentalā¦
Panoramic Videos from the Scenic Overlook
Here are a few panoramic videos that I captured from the scenic overlook. You can tell how windy it was this afternoon just by the audioā¦
Lake Fort Smith
After we left the recreation area, we headed back home, but stopped at Lake Fort Smith for a little more sightseeing and photosā¦
It was a very fun day, overall, but a little tiring after all of that wind at the scenic overlook.
Thatās all for now. I hope you enjoyed the content.
