I am really digging that... just thinking I'd probably need to put in HD springs on the rear Eibachs to make it work... any idea what the stock rear weighs?

Damn, LOD's been reading my mail. I just happen to be in the market for a rear bumper/tire carrier.

The 2 most important features I look for are hinge (is it gonna sag) and latch (is it gonna rattle)

Looking at the pics, I can see that the hinge looks sturdy enough. But I don't see ANY pics of the latching mechanism.

Anybody know how this thing latches closed? Or a link to a video of it being opened and closed?

For what it's worth, I ran a really similar carrier from them on my 2012 JK for a few years before I traded it in. I cannot remember the model but it was nearly identical to this (over tire basket and two rotopax mounts on each side). It held up wonderfully and was a great rear setup. Looked great and was super useful since I did not have a roof rack on that vehicle.

I wish it were also designed so that the arm had a link or pivot which allowed lowering the tire down (when swung open) near to the ground so that you could mount it much easier after removal.

I had AEV's front and rear bumpers on my '14 JKUR and loved the tire carrier on it, very beefy. The spindle design was perfect and I think I only greased it twice in 11 years. I've been looking for something similar for my '24 Bronco Raptor and this design from LOD looks nice as well.

why no pics or discussions about the latching mechanism? They got like 20 pics on their web site from every angle - but ALL avoid any angle that might reveal the latch. No mention of it in the description text either.

For me that's 50% of the "buy" decision (the other half being spindle/hinge which I can see clearly in their pics and it looks fine).

Is it a locking lever? A bolt? Easy to release and re-latch? Fit tight with no rattles? Something that's gonna bend and/or break under the stress of trail usage with a heavy ass 40" tire dangling off it?

I'm sure it's just an oversight, but even a trusting nice-guy like me is starting to think maybe there's a conspiracy to suppress the details of this critical component.

Because there is no latch like a traditional swing away, only a decoupler.

The arm carries the weight of all the spare and any accessories, and a small coupler attaches to the back of the tailgate onto LODs spare tire frame replacement unit.

You open the tailgate, and the LOD opens with it, no separate latch. It's what elevates this unit above most others on the market, in my opinion. Having had a TJ with a separate tailgate and swingarm, it's an enormous pain in the ass when your hands are full.

If you want to decouple the arm from the tailgate, you disconnect them. It's visible right here on both the tailgate side just below the taillight extension arm and the swingarm just above the rear camera area.

interesting. would love to see either a closeup of that tailgate coupler or a video of it being coupled/uncoupled. how is it for rattles? good tight connection?

EDIT: Found one. The audio blows. But he does demonstrate decoupling (with some effort LOL)

@Figmo I share your concerns and would like to see some close up photos or video of the latching mechanism. The ball stud I see looks small to me for the mass on the carrier arm especially if there is any type of impact, however minor. I would never want it to come unlatched at speed. Maybe I'm wrong and it is indeed robust and substantial. I'd like to see some elaborate detail in this regard to be more comfortable were I to purchase.

The center mounted light....yeesh. I could see tweaking the bracket and relocating it to the top of the framework next to the tire and then extending the harness along the arm and back into the vehicle. Not a fan of it sticking up and fixed next to the window.

I may call LOD and discuss some of this with them. I really like the idea of a decoupled arm that allows you to swing the carrier out of the way and separately from the tailgate if you so please.

On Edit: I did find the following video and while it is the LOD bumper/carrier for a Jeep, you can tell that similar hardware is used on it that offers a closer look as to function.

I called and spoke briefly with a woman at LOD today. Since my Bronco is a Raptor, I inquired about the bolt circle on the carrier and asked if they can do the larger size. Awaiting her call. If all goes well I think I'm going to take a crack at this one.

Ordered. Worked with Annette on the phone and LOD is aware of the bolt circle changes I need for the Bronco Raptor wheel as well as the wheel stud size increase necessary. Ordered with a few accessories, really looking forward to this mod. Not inexpensive but I suppose nothing is these days. I ended up getting almost $300 off due to the forum discount here. That helps!

Cool, would love you see this equipped once you have it. I am a bit hesitant to swap out bumpers at this point but would honestly probably pull the rear first if I did something.

I really did like mine on my JK and I think their price is pretty reasonable given what swing out rear carriers like this cost these days.

What was quoted lead time?

Roughly 3-4 weeks but I was told they would get back to me to provide a clearer picture.

I can see that I'll be tweaking a few things and I have no problem with that. I dont think the Raptor tailgate reinforcement plate is gonna jibe with the latch/stopper plate from LOD and will likely remove it. I don't see why I'll need it anymore anyway since the load path will now be transferred off of the tailgate and down to the bumper attachment at the passenger side frame rail. There are a few wiring mods too for things such as the rear camera, license plate light, third brake light, etc. I'll have to see about the straps that run to the trailer hitch as the hitch is integrated into the LOD bumper too. And I have no idea how it'll look aesthetically where the bumper will have a void between where the ends are in relation to the flares/flaps in comparison to the stock bumper fitment there. Additional clearance is a win but I still have no idea on the look. Should be an interesting project for sure.

Be sure you do a full review with pics once you get it. I was "this close" to pulling the trigger. But, like you, I was mulling if I wanted to take the chance on the latching mechanism.

BUT....then my Bronco slid down my icy driveway into my fence doing considerable damage to the drivers door. So now I'm in limbo as I wait for an opening at the body shop (2 months).

Man - those guys are just ALWAYS overbooked in my area. Sounds like a good business to get into.

Again, Jeep part number but much of it is directly related to that of the Bronco and provides a more detailed look.
