As much as Ford wants to point to the GP Jeeps as the inspiration for the Bronco, I think it’s pretty obvious that the International Harvester Scout was the true inspiration. A simple and more civilized Jeep (or ‘Jeep’ as they used to write it).

They sold 35,000 Scouts for 1961 and by the time the Bronco came on the scene, they had produced 100,000. Clearly, there was money to be made in this utility vehicle market.

So, here’s to the Scout.

I have always loved the look of the old Scouts. Not many of them out and about these days.

Of course, the Scout II was always my favorite.

My stepdad had a 76 or 77. Removable roof and manual transmission. Learned how to drive with that in the fields

We took it 4 wheeling with my uncle and his family. My uncle had a late 70’s or early 80’s grand wagoneer. My stepdad stuffed it in the ditch twice! Within a hundred yards or so!!! Great times, memories

Scout IIs are decent. Overall I always felt they were heavy for what they were. Many more engine choices than the Bronco.
