I realized when I had the top off this summer that I needed some type of storage for the back so that I could secure things when I was away from the vehicle. I wasn't thrilled with the metal storage drawer from Ford. I didn't like the big gaps on the sides because I have dogs and the fur would just collect down there and I also didn't like the fact that the drawer didn't open fully. So I decided to build my own.

It's not the nicest but I'm happy with it. The drawer slides really well except for right in the middle, it hangs up ever so slightly. How to fix that, I'd be happy to listen. I'm going to cover the top with a gray outdoor carpet material. I also have to figure out some type of divider system for the drawer itself to keep it organized. The drawer slides lock open halfway and fully so if I'm parked on a hill the drawer won't move. I'm going to use it for security storage and also camping.

I'm open to suggestions on how to improve it.

A member built one and covered his with a Ford or mabett cargo area protector. Taking a second look, i think mabett would be cheaper because you'd likely have to cut it due to tailgate hump. Carpet? Dogs? Yuck. That looks to be pretty nice plywood. I'd stain it using black stain and seal using like 20 coats of satin varithane.

This has me thinking for my flat floor / drawer design. I'm getting a BD because I don't want carpet. I'll probably build it and get it Line -X for that quality finish look, and then cover with cargo area protector. Perhaps some fat fluffy weather stripping around the edges would keep the dog hair up top. Dunno.

I can still access the hatch under the drawer when it's pulled all the way out

I covered the top with the carpet. Very short pile. I'm thinking of painting the rest of the wood cactus grey. Does anyone have the hex paint code for latex paints?

I thought about stain and varnish. They never turn out the way I'd like them to for me. It is nice wood, I wanted solid not particle board and it's sanded.

Can you show me? Just not seeing how in my head...
I can take a picture during the daytime. When you pull the drawer out to the full extent you can then release it even further using those knobs in the front and the whole drawer can pull out of the slide, but even before it pulls out completely I can get my hand in there to grab the lug nut wrench and jack or access that little hatch. I need to hold the drawer up with one hand but there's about a foot of space to be able to grab with my other hand. Otherwise I can pull the whole drawer out and put it on top and then I have full access underneath but I don't really like doing that cuz it's kind of a pain in neck to put it back in.

There's not much I would really use that area for other than to get to the tools but it would be good for some extra security for hiding something valuable. I guess. When the top is off and the doors are locked, you can't access the tailgate area. The tailgate remains locked so if somebody really wanted to get into my storage drawer they could use a sawzall or something. But again if they need it that bad they need it more than I do.

For me it's perfect for locking up some stuff when I go to the grocery store or go hiking and my Broncos going to be sitting open for a few hours in a public area.

The next thing I want to do is figure out some type of slide out drawer that I can put a 12 volt fridge on. I've seen them on Amazon but I want to figure out a way where I can install it when we go camping but not have it in the rest of the time so I have full access to the top of the box.

I have the M416 military trailer that I built. I want to to add a RTT, water tank for shower, bike rack and some kind of battery system for power.
