The people that do this type of crime know the vehicles that are easiest to strip. Older vehicles have cats that are more exposed than I’ve seen on the newer fords with turbos. Btw I’m a mechanic, not a thief lol.

And to add salt to it, if in California the Cats are like 2-3x the price because they have to be Cali Approved.

So a $100 cat cost $400 here.

Friend of mine is a mechanic at the Chevy Dealer here in town. Just last week they had two Silverados arrive on the transport without cats!

Can't have your catalytic converter stolen if you are straight piping it.

It's a big problem for employees that work at Portland International Airport. They watch us leave our cars in uniform and know that we'll be gone for periods of time. It has me nervous about parking the Bronco there. I've also had my gas siphoned and wish we could lock the gas cap.
From what I can see in pics of the cats on the Bronco are really tucked in there. Add the under body plates and it's almost impossible to grab and go.

Fuel filler is probably going to be capless like our other vehicles. Have to use a special funnel to open the flap if not filling normally at a gas station. Have not heard of anyone siphoning one of these since they started using this design.

On the Ford ecoboost V6's and even the 5.0 mustang they are tucked up close to the engine and not easy to get to. I can't speak to the 2.3L. The closer to the combustion chamber the more efficient they are so manufactures are moving them closer and closer. The balancing act is heat management. Cat converters get VERY hot. So if they were low mounted like days of old they would leave skid plate areas open for airflow.

There are too many "legit" reasons for having a scrap truck full of them.... I guess.
Last year I took in about 15 of them and made some good money for the Bronco fund. I saved them all from cars I bought to part out over the years.

I would be much more concerned with interior door handles. I heard a guy talking in the restroom on his phone to a friend that knew a guy that went to school with some girl that dated a friend of a high-level interior door handle thief. I guess he spent almost all day of every day thinking about stealing interior door handles. Yeah, the threat is real.

Welp... one of those fucking crackheads got me... Got in my little Outlander Sport yesterday to head to work, fired it up, and quickly discovered my catalytic converter and O2 sensors were stolen over night. Thing sounded like a god damn Trackhawk it was so loud! Well ok, not that loud, but pretty damn loud. They cut the pipe on both sides of the cat, cut the wires, and yanked it all out.

Anyone have any experience with a cat lock? Think this would actually help to prevent theft? Probably wouldn't stop them if they really wanted it, but may deter some from even trying and just move on to an easier vehicle.

Do you have a link to how that is supposed to work because to me it just looks like a waste of money.
