When the U2 spy plane lands, a ground crew chases them in the runway to call out the height above the ground to the pilot.

The Air Force has used official cameros and Pontiac G8s for this… at least from the last time I saw it…

…but it looks like someone managed to sneak a Bronco in for some fun:

I believe that they have also used Vic's and Chargers. Thought they actually had to get the wingtips on the road of the cars so they could reattach the taxi wheels...

The U2 has sliders on the tips. The pilot basically balances it on the center wheels until it’s stopped and then it just tips over.

Then they attach the wing wheels and the plane either taxis or gets tugged back.

No way anyone is leaning out the back window of a sports car to reattach an outrigger at 100+ mph.

;)

When the tug comes out, that’s when they attach the wing wheels.

It’s pretty cool to watch in person too. Saw several of them when I was doing a job in California.

Always thought this was the most interesting part of the U2. Meaning if a missile was ever developed to attack a U2 you couldn’t speed up or slow down. You can’t turn. You just have to dive to get somewhere we’re the margin between low /high speed stalls is larger.
Undoubtedly the most daunting problem faced by U-2 pilots was the infamous "coffin corner," the terribly tiny margin between Mach-shock and stall buffet. At altitudes above 65,000 feet, the first U-2s had an interval of only six knots (7 mph) indicated airspeed between the onset of Mach buffet and a stall. In other words, the difference between the U-2's slowest flying speed and its fastest was only six knots. The margin was so narrow that Lockheed test pilots reported that in a bank, a U-2's inner wing could be stalled while its outer one was buffeting wildly from excess speed.

They used 5.0 Mustang GTs in the late 80s and early 90s. If you can find an SSP Mustang that is non-restored, it will have all of the AF markings under the hood for coolant and oil. Those Mustangs were just like State Patrol vehicles in many states.

At Osan AB in Korea in the early/mid 80's they used El Camino's...very cool to watch them spiral up to altitude to begin their mission...

I bet several Air Force personnel are on the Bronco waiting list, and they diverted a routine U2 training mission to fly over the MAP to try and identify if any of their Broncos had been built.
