Walking the very beaten path. all i ever see are copies. Used to work at a facility and would assist quality engineers with RMA returns. Once received a chinese knockoff of one of our products. they nailed the outer appearance/design, but the inside was completely different and inferior. it was as if they only bothered to copy the appearance from pictures but never got their hands on one to reverse engineer the mechanicals. they even copied the logo and a blank serial code plate.

Agree its iterative, and historically Chinese car manufacturers have had to copy becasue the designers dont have international training in general, as do designers from Europe and US. - but "they cant help themselves" sounds resentful and racist.

Pesonally this design does not bother me that much because the design ques that are lifter are from so many different brands / models! Its pretty amazing! Whats really amazing is that they mix them all up in a way that is actually working - integrated and flowing together.
*Its not my thing, but I must say the overall design is flowing quite well.

its not "the leadership" - its car manufacturing history is not "thousand year" either - Its that CHina is just learning how to design cars that appeal to an international audience. SOmetimes they hire European and US designers to lead. But the kids coming up through design programs in China dont typically go over to Art Center, not becasue they are "blocked by the government" - its becasue its hard to do that. Hard to get accepted by Art Center, hard to pay for it, hard to get parents and grandpartent that will pay for you to study overseas to be a doctor or lawyer - to convince them to pay $60k per year for you to "be a designer" - Wha?? Its just hard on so many levels.
And China needs to create vehicles that appeal to its own market.
Its a really complex situation, not just the government.

But for sure, there will be tons or extremely well built Chinese EVs coming to the US - with varying levels of design that appeals to the US market. Because they can make stuff, really really well.
