That said, I'm pretty sure adding a drop down cup holder in the center of the rear seat could have been done. At least now, I can justify not giving the kids anything back there.

If you opt for the leather package you get drop down rear cup holders in the bench.

Figures, I was unaware.
But I passed on the leather and already have a vin so no changes now.
And in spite of Ford's desire to push people to ever higher packages, I'm not adding leather just to score 2 cup holders. Part of why I ordered a BD was to get the wash out interior.

I can't help but laugh about this, my 335 had the same shitty design for cup holders. they sat under the front of the dash, but wouldn't fit any cup larger than basically a soda can, and had to be tilted at nearly a 45 deg angle just to get them out. things spilled ALL THE TIME.

Easily the worst design for a cup holder I've ever seen, and everything else on that car was utterly marvelous

did you get leather?
No marine grade vinyl on the 2 doors the cup holders are built into the sides in the back next to the windshield google it or look it up there bad ass
