Designed my own low profile cargo box (for complete lay flat mattress)

Hey all,

So I wanted something to fill that 4 in gap between the back seats being down and the cargo area, so that I could lay a mattress flat with no issues. I ended up designing and prototyping a low profile cargo box that works really well.

And it let me lay a double mattress down across with no drop off. Steel hinges and a lock are on the way!

It nicely fit a table, stove, cooking stuff, 2 chairs and a blanket with room

Almost makes me wish I had a 4 door. Almost.... LOL

Absolutely you could sell these! I’m still waiting on Diabolical’s slide out rack to include the adjustable top panel for securing stuff like work laptop and hideaway sub. Great job, it looks like a bracket could easily secure it to the tie down points, and once lock is installed, and cargo mat laid on top, decent extra security!

Like. Took me a while to realize that there's no bottom, so you have access to tools. Thinking I could build it out of wood and hidden piano hinge. Much better and more secure than the plastic big box I have now.

Nice work! I'm jealous of that low-profile!

To get the depth I wanted in my own drawer, plus clearance for the plastic mouldings, I ended up way taller than desired.

This is great! The only think I'd be curious about is the weight limit. I currently have the security drawer since I have a soft top. My biggest fear would be traveling with my work laptop, but the security of the drawer is nice in lots of situations. The challenge is that now the floor is not level in the opposite direction: the drawer is higher than the seatbacks. I was recently on a brief camping trip, didn't want to deal with a tent, and thought I could sleep in the back. Not having the level floor was miserable, so I need to figure something out. The security drawer has developed an annoying squeak as well.

What holds the top open?
Does the lid bow in the middle if you sit directly in the middle?

I'm thinking you'd need a brace down the center, or across it. I'll go across so I can put rifles in there....trying to map it in my head....was going to leave the back end open, but then realize I'll want to lock it. duh. And wondering if everything fits in a 4" space? Figure I'll use 1/4" ply, which is so fragile...but want to maximize the space. His aluminum works for that nicely...but I'm not a metal shop guy.
