My fav. was always the spark plug changes in the 5.4 Triton motors. IYKYK.
Oof. :)

Had the dealer do those at 50K when I started hearing about how they break. Fortunately, by that time, the two-piece plugs were updated to a one-piece design. But that #4 cylinder isn't fun. There's stuff mounted to the firewall and some hoses that need to be moved out of the way to get to that one, which I found out when I changed the coils somewhere after 100K.

Yeah I remember way back when that was a thing recommending a tune up or a customer asking for one and giving them the menu price for the plugs and being told we were terrible people trying to rob everyone blah blah blah...only to see it on a hook being towed in later that day or the next with plugs broken off in the heads. Bravo Ford lol.

Good video. Despite what Ford and the OLM say, I wouldn’t recommend going more than 5000 miles between changes even with stout oils due to fuel dilution. Several users, myself included have done oil analyses showing 3-5% fuel dilution at or before 5000 miles in the 2.7. This will thin the oil and reduce its protective and lubricative properties. Probably won’t matter to you if you’ll sell it before 100k though. Check the dipstick, and if it reeks like gas you are probably diluting.

The exception to this would be if you’re doing 45+ minutes of highway driving regularly, that usually clears the fuel out and allows you to go 7000+ miles pretty safely, on a “full synthetic”.

Happy Sunday Bronco6G!

So I know there's a ton of info already floating around here and on YouTube about how to change the oil on the 2.7L, but hey, what's one more for the pile, right? 🤷

Most of you know me for my "how to" writeups on the forum. In 2025, I've decided to take the help guides to the big screen. This latest video is for the new Bronco owners who might still be taking their rigs to the dealer and paying $120+ for an oil change.

Seriously, this is one of the easiest DIYs you can do, and it's way cheaper.

Check out this video guide - it's quick, simple, and shows you everything you need to know:

Trust me, once you do it yourself, you'll wonder why you ever paid someone else to do it. Plus, it's a great way to get to know your Bronco a little better.

Cheers,

Rusty
Just finished up the 1st oil change on the 2.7l, your video helped but this is so easy. Two things I'd like to add to your instructions:

1 - The oil comes flying out and to the passenger side, I will need to raise my oil pan up to minimize overspray. Yes I took a little bit in the face for the 1st time in over a 1000 changes. I learned long ago to put a bunch of newspaper down and did this time so the mess was minimal.

2 - You don't need to remove the front bolts since the engine skid has slots, it also makes it easier when re-installing to hold the pan up while you put the rear bolts in.

Again thanks for the video!!

Is it stupid easy? Yes. Do I watch these videos anyway? Also yes.
Appreciate you putting it out there anyway and talking through exactly what and why.

My dad ran his own small shop for many years. I lost him 4 years ago this week. Over his lifetime he forgot more about mechanicing than I'll ever know (and I know a good bit!). His shop was a nice little sanctuary for me every evening and weekend I got to spend there, so a good quality video like this is always cathartic for me. Crazy how much I miss the work/talks in the small hours of the morning the most. He never got to see my Bronco, but he was so excited and told everyone I had ordered it -- I don't think it'll ever actually leave my stable of cars. I have a couple of oil changes left on the house at my dealership, but I'll be back in the DIY seat before long, so I just wanted to say thank you.

You're talking to the guy who spends his Sunday mornings watching Horsepower TV on Motortrend, despite knowing how to do most of the stuff they show, so I get it. Also, I lost my dad at 19, and can relate to you there. It sounds like you had the benefit of many years watching and learning from him. After pop died, I had a group of friends who had a shop, which turned into that special sanctuary for me and served for my years learning to turn a wrench as well.

I've done hundreds of jobs like these oil changes. One morning, I thought maybe I could help someone else out to each them. Some of us didn't grow up with a dad to show them this sort of stuff. And those folks are among many who I love helping.

Thanks so much for sharing the story about your dad! Glad I was able to help.

I have been changing my own oil since the beginning - The oil change on the Bronco is so easy to change, especially since I have 37’s and don’t have to put it on a ramp, 🥹

nice video! 🔥🙏🏽🔥

Btw I’d recommend swapping out the oil pan plug with this: https://a.co/d/gTlFrbZ

Nice to just screw in the key to let the oil out.
IMHO, there's no way you should be doing oil changes without this plug.
I made a HUGE mess on my first change and moderate mess on the second even though I knew to expect the gusher.
Ever since the new plug was installed, I haven't lost a drop.

surprisingly my first oil change after which I installed this, I managed not to lose a drop.

But I feel better with the ronin installed, don’t need to be as careful.

Good write up. Just make sure you put 7quarts for 2.7.
I do every time.... and still using the factory drain plug... no leaks...

Are you guys really paying over a hundred bucks for oil changes? My dealer is around $70 and I just think it’s more convenient so I don’t have to dispose of the old oil on my own. But nice write up I do appreciate it the detail!

It probably only costs about $40 in supplies and 15 minutes of time to do your own depending on how long you want to let the oil drip out. Dealer will keep it all day at a minimum if I'm lucky around here. No harm in doing it at the dealer way if you prefer, other than them using the motorcraft synthetic blend. I would want a slightly more robust oil personally, maybe the motorcraft full synthetic if you can ask the dealer to put that in, but ideally something like the Mobil 1 ESP 0W-30 or 5W-30 because both Bronco engines dilute the oil with fuel. There is a Kevlar/Rubber belt driving the oil pump sitting in oil, I wouldn't want that oil to get too acidic, thin, or contaminated. That said, there aren't highway shoulders full of disabled Ford's littering the nation so it's probably OK regardless of oil type, at least for a decade or so.

Yeah, unfortunately the Ford dealers down here in Florida are pigs.

I can only speak to my personal experience. I have paid $120 plus from Ford dealers in Florida for a full synthetic oil change. In those situations, I had limited time (either before a road trip or slammed with work). In those scenarios, I chalked up tge excess price as my cost for convenience, as my truck was already in the shop undergoing in-warranty repairs.

I can't speak to what the rest of the dealers in America are charing their customers, but I would hope the family owned dealerships are focused creating repeat business, customer loyalty, and serving their communities.

I will note that most of these I visited personally were owned by "larger groups" whose focus is not on customer loyalty and fairness, but rather the almighty dollar.

I live in South Florida and car work/repair is absolutely insane expensive. Labor rates seem to be double other areas in the country. I just paid close to $500 to get a simple flange pipe exhaust connector welded to my classic truck. About 1 hour work, 3" of 3" pipe and a flange connector. I do most of all of my own work but welding is one of the things I can't do.

Back to the topic- I just paid 28.95 for a new drain plug for my Bronco at the local Ford dealer. (Had points to use). Was shocked how expensive it was. I am on the original one from 2022, no issues or leaks after about 4 oil changes. I am not sure how often it needs to be replaced or if you can just change the O Ring? I have read somewhere that you can buy just the O Ring on Amazon.

Just buy these instead. They're 4 for $9 and they're essentially the same exact thing, right down to the part number printed on it. For $2.25 a each, I'll take the peace of mind and just replace them.
