Ford has said it's none of those things.

Literally a super-expensive hitch and wires.
Transmission cooler is std on the AT, so the tow package is just the hitch and wire harness I assume.

For comparison my 2019 Flex didn't have the factory tow package. Easy enough to add a Curt hitch. Sway control is disabled in the system without the factory option, however if you are handy with forscan it can probably be re-enabled. As far as wiring my flex had all the fuses, relays, and wiring to the rear for towing. All I had to do was buy a different rear harness that had the towing plugs for about $70.

My major concern is/was how soon will there be aftermarket options. I have an off-road trailer and I'm not going to want to wait for an aftermarket option to show up to use it.

Rethinking that now that I know I won't see my Bronco until 2022.

The accessory tow package doesn't include install. That's probably the difference in price. I may just opt to buy the accessory and do the install myself.
There was another thread about aftermarket, I think it was from @618TRVLWILD re: 4WP. They mentioned "after the first 100 machines were built then they could release their products". I would suspect that Reese/Curt/Draw-Tite would have similar options with the same timeframe.

What exactly is involved in installing the hitch after we buy the Bronco?

Does it just bolt on or does it need to be welded?

I only need a receiver for my bike rack.

EDIT:

This is for Ranger but just wanted to show how "simple" they can be to add:
electrical and hitch

The "group think" is that it will be a bolt on and plug in affair. Easy peasy.

Okay, I might be showing off how little I understand about cars here but...
I want a tow hitch for a bike rack/snow sport rack, but have no intention of ever actually towing with it. Do I need the entire tow package, which to my understanding changes other specs on the vehicle, or is there a way to just add this after market?
An aftermarket receiver is all you need if you only want to carry receiver mounted accessories. I have a detailed post with video here on installing a receiver as well as wiring.
