As long as you keep your foot on the brake until the parking brake is fully engaged, there shouldn't be any difference with just putting it straight into park.
This is how I've always done it in all of my cars that had a working parking brake.

Crawler gear, basically a granny first gear not used in normal driving but gives more control on rocks.
I used it one time off-road and crawler gear in 4L is pretty incredible.

I have used it several times in busy parking structures but the clutch is so nice feathering first gear also isn't difficult.

Yup. Learned it at Off-Roadeo and using it on all my (AT) vehicles.

While it is the ā€œproperā€ thing to do, I donā€™t normally and seldom do it. My old crawler CJ2a had a c4 and no parking brake (micolock). Never had a problem with the parking pawl in 10 years and
many Rubicon trips...

Curious if people are using the procedure for going to Park described in the Off-Roadeo? Seems to be some very sound logic behind it, and think I may start to use it on all vehicles.
Yes, but only off-road. Itā€™s flat in Houston, so I mostly donā€™t bother.
