I have two large size dogs and am trying to figure out the best way to keep them safe in the cargo area. I’d tried tying their shortened leashes to the tie down….but the just kept getting tangled. Has anyone figured out a reasonable system to run a line across the cargo area pillars to hook them to?

This is something we just did today. We had a leash coupler we hooked to the car seat anchors behind the seats. It worked really well with one dog.

Is there a need to have them leashed while in the cargo area? Besides jumping out, obviously. I only have the dogs the cargo area because it should be the safest for them but never thought about needing to restrain them while in there (they wouldn't jump out).

As much as I’d LOVE to pile on, back to OP.

If you’re putting a dog with ANY restraint on a collar instead of a harness, know that a sudden stop over about 20 mph will probably break their neck… if the car isn’t moving, no worries… but please don’t restrain a dog in a moving vehicle by a collar…

In an open Jeep Wrangler I used Raingler nets over the top, side window openings and between the cargo area and the front seats. I also used a Ruff Rider Roadie harness to secure my (at that time) 94# GSD in the cargo area by herself. I once saw a dead man who had rolled his truck and his heavy tool box hit him. I also fully agree that a simple collar is a little worse at keeping a dog safe than letting him ride in the back of an open pickup bed.
