I’ll just tune/bolt on mod the 2.3L. It’s not gonna be a DD for me anymore, rather a fun weekend truck, and so it makes sense to me to pay less and go with the non constrained engine.

As for the weight difference between a 2 and 4 door(all else being equal), isnt it only ~200lbs?

I’m hoping for a tuning kit for the 2.3 as well. But if I was looking for a high performance engine I wouldn’t have ordered a Bronco.

I like to think of it like this: Name a time where the biggest engine isn't an advantage in an older, or classic car. Take the 1967 Camaro. Two six cylinder options available. The 230 and the 260, both with 1 barrel Rochesters. Then for the baseline Camaro, two V8 options, the 327 two barrel rated at 210 HP and the 327 4 barrel rated at 275 HP. Since only 26% of buyers opted for a six, clearly the V8 was preferred. However, a total of 47% of all Camaros in 1967 came with the two barrel 210 HP version, so it was clearly the logical engine for the base at the time. Only 11% of buyers ordered the 327 four barrel, 270 HP car. But later, which one is the preferred engine? Likewise in the SS version only 0.5% of total Camaro buyers opted for the L-78 SS 396 with the Holley 4150 rated at 375 HP, by far the best selling SS was the SS-350 with 13%, then the SS-396/325 with the four barrel Rochester at 325 HP took 2% of total buyers.

Do you think anyone regretted buying a base 327 four barrel, or the L-78?
How about Bronco? You could choose the 170 Cubic inch 6 cylinder or the 289 V8. I never regretted buying a 289 V8.

So absent getting the manual, I personally would always go for the 2.7; probably not necessary, but for resale or collecting I doubt you could go wrong with it and it's bound to be more fun along the way!
