When in a remote location and in a bind, are these kits useful?

Tire plugs are useful anywhere.

If you know how to use them prior to being in a bind, yes.
If you're trying to figure them out in a pinch, no so much.

Plug kits are great but don't get a wimpy one from Auto-Zone, it's not easy to plug a heavy duty 33" tire. You also need to practice, trying for the first time on side of a busy road at night in the rain with no shoulder will not end well.

For me, I put the spare on and will only plug on getting the second flat (knock on wood, hasn't happened yet).

OK. Thanks all for replying. Makes sense not using it until absolutely required. That’s more like what I had in mind.

Got a three day trip out to Big Bend Ranch State Park next month. Pretty remote. It seems like a fairly small (to carry along) backup for the spare.

Any specific brands to recommend?

Actually, I did not think the Flex Seal spray was all that great on metal. The Flex Seal “paint” did roll on very well however. So it works on tires too huh? Do you just spray it on the outside around the leak?

I assume you saw the TV add where they put Flex Tape on the leaking truck tire tread and stopped the air leak before the tire had to be re-inflated ? It also does a great job on steel boat hulls after sustaining torpedo damage.

I have a set, have only tried on an old tire wheel not under load. You need to carry windex/alcohol/water to clean the area well prior to application. I would use with a plug if possible. I have always used plugs for tread/puncture flats. Keep in mind they are not DOT. So the patches are more for getting you back to a tire shop and replace.
