When you engage a clutch is that "letting it out" or "pushing it in"?

But anyone smarter than a 5th grader knows you're "letting it out". :)

Welome to the forum Marty.

”Engaging“ the clutch will cause the clutch to exert pressure and connect the two components together. ”Disengaging“ the clutch removes the pressure and allows the two components to spin freely from one another.

There are many different types of clutches for different things… but if we’re talking a manual transmission… the two components are the transmission input and the engine’s flywheel. You disengage the clutch by pressing the pedal, and engage the clutch by letting the pedal go.

If we’re talking about the average Go-kart, you engage the clutch by pressing the gas pedal, and disengage the clutch by letting the gas go until the clutch springs can exert enough forces to overcome the centrifugal forces.

Engaging the clutch causes the pressure plate to push into the friction disc, so it depends how far you're wanting to split hairs.

Uh, it engages when you take your foot off the pedal, but be careful. You don't want to pop the clutch. I can teach you on my 74. It has the world's longest clutch. It has been measured and is in the Guiness Book.

thanks for the replies...most everyone understood the humor in the question and I appreciate that....here are several posts from another thread that literally made me ask the question.

I obfuscated peoples info as I am not trying to rile anyone up....but there does seem to be confusion about engaging and dis-engaging a clutch.

:D:D:D:D:D

If FoMoCo would send me my Bronco from Dirt Mountain I wouldn't have any time to be sitting here looking at posts!

Disengage the clutch and see how far that gets you.

I think when you engage the clutch, you’re committing to marry it.
